I'm wondering out aloud whether the two problems are symptoms of the same problem; if the
flywheel sensor or engine management loses all it's required signals you would have issues with
the correct fuelling and signal to the rev counter. I'm no expert and actively hate car electrics
but thought I'd still pitch my tuppenceworth (for what it's worth!) into the pot...

quite common i'm afraid. usually its a long term intermittent failure only gradually getting worse with time. A good whack on the top of the panel normally helps. Or in true IT fashion turning off and on again. its rumoured to be a dodgy connection at the speedo end, so dash out job to investigate.

but dont worry about it, its not an mot failure because they dont take the car up to any speed so they dont notice.

and on the bright side your mileage will not get so high!

you also soon learn to know your speed from your revs.

Do'h!

Ignore the last post; I forgot totally we're talking speedo here and Xm's are cable operated
rather than electrical which is something I've been messing about with lately on a Xantia!

It could either be the cable, the diff pick up or the reverse face of the instrument breaking
the solder joints away off the PCB.

If it is perchance a Mk2 and has an electronic speedo, the problem is usually dry joints where the input sockets are soldered to the PCB, particularly the red one. Just resolder all the pins and the problem will probably go away. You can sometimes actually see the cracks in the solder.

Mk1 so that makes the speedo cable drive I think. Citroenxm will confirm no doubt. If it is cable drive then the problems are due to separate causes I think.

I expect that the square ends on the cable are worn.

I don't really know but I suspect it is electrical as it is so intermittent and has the appearance of electrical rather than a cable.

The Mk 1 has a mechanical cable drive, so no electrics.

Hi Lord1nz

It is an electronic speedo on the 2.5 and on mine it was dead simple. Worked for the first couple of miles andf then stopped. Then stopped altogether. Cause -- duff sender at the gearbox. Readily available off the shelf as the same unit is fitted to a number of later models.

Mike.
