A broken or corrupted digital display on the dash seems to be the #1 XM problem, but how many displays does the car have?

I know that sounds like a stupid question to ask, particularly as I have an XM sitting on my drive, but I spoke with a fellow Citroen nut earlier today and there was talk of "left" and "right" displays - mine has "forward" and "back", both on the right!

The "back" one is a single digital LCD display that shows what gear I've selected (car is automatic). It works fine first thing in the morning, but as the day goes on the top right segment fades out of view.

The "forward" one tells me the time and the temperature and works just fine. It even blinks at me to tell me when it's cold.

Am I missing one? unsure.gif

The s2 cars which yours is, have an additional display you've not mentioned to the left
of the strip which the 'forward' right hand one you have mentioned is fitted to. It'll be
level with the rev counter as you glance down whilst driving.

FWIW, it only seems useful to show what radio station I'm tuned into as the fussy "nanny
knows best" tell-offs offered by it the rest of the time when doors and bonnets are open
aren't really necessary... biggrin.gif

The S1s also have a left hand display, notable for giving spurious warnings about tail lamp bulbs having failed and actual warnings like water level low. Some right hand displays also have a selectable readout of instantaneous and average fuel consumption, miles to empty, average speed etc..

Ah great, thanks guys.

I think mine being the pauper's version means that the left hand display is simply missing: I thought it might somehow be cleverly integrated with the plastic strip that runs across there, but Paul's piccie makes it obvious that there's a thin bezel running around the display. There ain't such a thing on my car.

I have pauper's rotating knobs for setting the temperature too ph34r.gif

Cheers, Phil.

Hi Thw

The LH digital display is not fitted to SX Mk2's. Not a high enough spec car to qualify for a display which normally fails anyway.

Hi Phil

You are correct, yours is presumably a SX which does not have the l/h display, it does though have a dual zone heater which the VSX doesnt have and I personally think is a great improvement.

Interesting! The dual zone heater is surely one up from a single zone?

The up/down buttons are a nineties fad that takes ten times longer to adjust than twisty knobs. In addition, a 'digital' temperature can't be set without you taking your eyes off the road and sending bus queues scattering while you attempt to make your feet hotter.

The C6 bless it retains them but every other modern car you'll get in - S-Class, my C5, you name it - has the dials back. Funny how it can take ten years for manufacturers to see the bloody obvious rolleyes.gif

Of course having no LH digital display is one more reason not to take your eyes off the road.

Does anyone else get infuriated by films where the driver spends half his time looking at the passenger whilst talking? I find myself screaming (literally) "Look where you're going!". Problem is that new drivers, seeing this sort of thing, think it's OK to look anywhere but the road ahead.

Remember when old films had the driver sawing the wheel back and forth continuously to indicate that the car was moving? American cars must have had very poor directional stability.

Problem is, what is obvious to some is not obvious to others. What makes some people happy won't do the same for others. It could be argued that the simple dial/twist controls are moron-proof. No insult intended. But adjusting the temperature of your air conditioning system with a twist of a dial or pressing a button makes no difference. You learn to automatically make the adjustments. I am perfectly happy with the digital display auto aircon system which I've enjoyed for 10 years after 10 years of twist thingies on the BX and a few more decades on a large number of cars of various makes with all kinds of configurations that were never a problem. If you think this lay out takes your eyes off the road and 10 times longer to adjust, you have a problem and should try to find a vehicle with deux chevaux controls. How do we work the radio/stereo/CD player in flight by the way? Can we do it without looking? Can we shift gears, operate pedals, indicate, etc, etc without looking? Come on biggrin.gif Rant over tongue.gif

The actual adjustment is not an issue with me, its just that in the SX its all mechanical - no electronics - surely thats got to be worth something. smile.gif

That's quite funny Derek, I often get the feeling some of my occasional passengers think I'm being anti-social because I look at the road while driving, and thus talk to them without making eye contact most of the time!

Which would they prefer, broken conversation, or going home in the back of an ambulance because I loose it while looking at them? laugh.gif
