Would anyone care to give their opinion on this? http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...em=260334203340

Seller has no feedback, but then everyone has to start somewhere. My problem is although I think I might get my license back (banned for medical reasons last January) I won't know until next week at the earliest, and the auction ends tomorrow. If sanity prevails and I leave it alone, assuming the reported condition is accurate, could anyone give me an idea of what an estate of similar spec and in similar condition would sell for on here?

I'm not comiting myself to buying another XM; it was while driving my Exclusive Estate almost 3 years ago that I had my first stroke, followed a few weeks later by another one and an epileptic fit (reason for the 12 month ban) last January. BUT these damn cars are adictive and if that one has everything working properly to start with, I'd be in with a chance of maintaining the thing. Oh Well.........Jim.

2.5's seem to be the most sought after of the XM's.......except for the V6 perhaps, so I'd expect some fierce bidding at the end.

I wouldn't bid without going to see it first, so the sellers feedback doesn't really matter.

Sellers usually list the bad points, I've never seen a perfect one before...... unsure.gif

BTW. Good luck with your licence Jim.

Paul.

I'm pretty certain that interest in this car will be high and if you bid and are fortunate to win
such a smart looking car you'd have no problem finding a que of buyers here on the forum
should things not work out for you in other respects!

As Paul has said, you need to judge the car on it's own merits rather than the ebay seller;
in a worse case it may even be fortunate for a total muppet or wose, a devious shark, to
still find themselves with a very good car - at the end of the day on collection and full payment
you can walk away if the car is not as described and ebay builds a lot more safeguards into
the process for buyersw than sellers = bad news maybe if you are a seller though.

Remeber a seller can't leave a tit for tat reposte red mark now if you leave them one!

Thanks Paul,

I tried `phoning the DVLA this afternoon; they are still waiting for results of eye tests I had a couple of weeks ago to filter through to their medical people before making their decision so I guess it would be foolish to bid on it. Shame though, it looks like a rather nice car; especially if it's had the work done that he says it has. Problem is that without a license I'd have to get someone to bring it up here from Shropshire.

Off the point and a bit of a long shot, I had a V6 Exclusive Auto Estate that I sold to a club member a couple of years ago. It had tax and MOT, ran well but had so many relatively small things wrong with it that it needed to go to someone who could do the work. I can't remember the name of the guy who bought it, but the registration was IUI 2113. Do you by any chance know if it's still on the road? I'm not interested in buying it back, just curious as to what happened to it.

I'm pretty sure that V6 rings a bell actually as a similar car fitting the description was offered
on ebay located on the Isle of Skye!! Maybe my wires are crossed but it ran out of tax in June this year:

Hi Jim

The 2.5 description has the odd error. The car does NOT have aircon. Engine bay photo is not easy to look at but not particularly well looked after in MHO (Battery cover and engine top cover are missing, cannot see the strut heads to comment). Mileage is on the good side for one of these. It is already a bit over the price I would have bid had I been in the market for another 2.5 Estate.
Bits of IUI2113 have been spread around a bit and are now keeping other XM's going I am afraid. The long list particularly multiple welding, drive shafts and front suspension/steering at last MOT time made it just too difficult to justify the work and cost.
Best of luck with the DVLA decision.

John

I think our collective knowledge of XMs is a considerable advantage when buying, not only do we know what to look for but anyone who is selling a car with faults would far rather sell it to someone who knows what they are buying so that there will be no comeback.

The white estate I bought recently was sold to me at a considerably lower price than he probably could have got because he seemed to think that I knew what I was talking about and didn't want the hassle of someone complaining or bringing it back. In the event it only needed a handbrake cable for the MOT but it does need a number of electrical problems attended to, but I was more than happy. biggrin.gif

Hi Jim

Further to the ebay 2.5TD estate. If you miss out on it then it might be worth you having a look back through the Available section here. DJGLW a regular poster had some cars to sell a little while ago including a couple of 2.5 estates. I have not seen anything to suggest that they sold so it might be worth checking. I think he is just south of Glasgow so a bit closer to you.

John

That is very nice, looks to be in good condition and those wheels suit them very well too.

Im always a little dissapointed that Citroen did not give such a high spec, expensive car air con wacko.gif

There is often a lot of bad points listed for Xms, and this has non, that doesnt mean it will be perfect laugh.gif

Even simple things, like the right hand display, windows etc, all the fiddly things to put right, doesnt mention if they work.

Definitely needs viewing before buying, unless of course your too far away and fancy a gamble.

Thanks Everyone,

Minijet, I'm in Kirriemuir, Scotland so getting it up here before knowing if I'll get my license back really didn't make a lot of sense. Besides, as XMexclusive pointed out, a car bought here from someone who knows what they are talking about tends to make sense. Ok Mr. XMexclusive, I was sorry to hear the old car has been broken, but I fully understand why. The reason I sold it so cheap was that there were just too many faults for me to deal with. Adding in the problems you found, I appreciate it made much more sense to break it and use the parts to keep other cars on the road. Just out of interest, what happened to the full leather interior? From memory, it was in pretty good condition.

Seriously, if things work out with my license and I do go for another XM, it would be my day to day car, so it would have to be an Estate in good condition to start with, be a Diesel ( preferably manual) with Bosch injector pump and have working aircon. I like big engines that can comfortably cruise at 70 to 80 mph with no stress and would appreciate opinions over the relative merits of the 2.5 and 2.1 diesels. I've been lucky enough to have had two V8 Rovers; a SD1 followed by a P6. Both had big lazy engines that unless you raced them, never really broke a sweat. The P6 was the best, Jager dials lit up in green on the dash, beautiful styling, but a strict 4 seater that does 24 mpg (if your lucky) just cannot be run on a day to day basis. At least I can't aford to nowadays. Oh well; I should know later this week if my license is gone for another year...................Thanks guys, Jim.

Hi Jim

You are very unlikely to find a 2.1 manual estate with aircon, out of six I have only had one with aircon and that was a Mk1. I have managed OK without it most of the time except for a four hour traffic jam between Birmingham and Manchester a couple of years ago in 33C, I must admit I could have done with it then but that was the only occaision I can think of. I also think that 2.5s don't have Bosch pumps, I'm sure someone will put me right if that's not so.

I've been to Kirriemuir, that's where the breeder of our German Shepherd lived, she is called Kirrie for that reason (the dog that is).

Hi Jim

All 2.5TD XM's have Bosch injector pumps and are manuals while most later 2.1's were auto and Lucas pumps. All Mk2 diesel Estates for the UK were VSX's, no SX's or Exclusives were imported. Some were upgraded to special order both at factory and by dealers (aircon/leather/alloys/heated seats) with mixed results in the case of thje dealers work. This particularly applies to aircon (sometimes simple non standard installation), carpets and trim which may not match the leather.

The leather from IUI2113 is now in one of my 2.5 estates as it was both good condition and one of the higher spec leathers Citroen fitted to XM's. Actually IUI2113 though petrol, was a typical factory upgrade from VSX (alloys/black carpet/leather trim/heated seats) registered new by Citroen as an V6 Exclusive but they overlooked the factory VSX badge on the tailgate.

If you can, take a good look at any 2.5 you are thinking of buying as they can be very variable and many owners/sellers are not that accurate with the descriptions. It is also worth asking/ringing round the local Citroen dealers as they do not really want the cars and only give less than £500 on a trade in. Then they will only sell virtually all such XM's as a trade sale for little or no mark-up. They get very few these days but you only need one so might just strike lucky.

John
