Insurance, Significant Exclusions and Limitations

Hi All

Insured the new estate today ready to drive it home on Friday. Just had a quick scan through the blurb provided and came across a sheet of "key facts". Not noticed one of these before but it had a significant exclusions and limitations section. One of them "Driving a car which does not belong to you" caught my eye as the Exclusions were:- Use outside the UK;
A car registered outside the UK;
If your car is disposed of or damaged beyond repair;
Use of a car that is otherwise uninsured:

It was the last one that caused me the most surprise particularly as the cover was restricted to third party only.

I have carefully read through both of my policies and I'm pleased to say they don't mention that.

My policy says something similar to that. I can drive other cars third party, as long as the car is not in my name and is insured by someone else. It also says i can not use other cars outside of the UK too.

There are so many get out clauses for insurance companies though. I was reading one policy (not mine) that said it covered the use of other cars third party but only in the event of an emergency! A little pointless and difficult to prove.

I recently had call to borrow a friends car which was temp off the road as the insurance had lapsed, the car had tax and test, but i thought i would check with the police 1st before using (due to the insurance situation), i was informed that it is up to individual insurers wether or not you can use an uninsured car on your policy
... Off to the insurer...
I contacted my insurance broker ( The AA ) and explained the situation, the outcome is/was that as long as i was in the driving seat i was covered, as soon as i left the car it was NOT insured in any shape or form, so for example, if i stopped to get some cigs and a paper and the car was hit by another insured driver while i was in the shop, the claim would be invalid ,even though the other driver accepted full responsibility and was fully insured..
Its worth checking out because i would think the majority of drivers take it as read that they are automatically insured to drive another car on a 3rd party basis

There is another twist to the insurance saga. Apparantly you can only drive another car on you car policy, my son has a pick up truck which I am nor covered to drive, it being a commercial vehicle.

I got the XM back all right anyway.

Hi all.

Although little known, I think it has always been the case that if your insurance covered you to drive someone else's car, it was only on a third party basis and only if the car was otherwise insured anyway. For several years now the driving other cars clause has disappeared off my main insurance. Paradoxically it still appears on a collectors policy I have for an old Landy, which is the cheapest insurance I have !
