Arrived back from Newcastle last night with not one but two diesel engines and gearboxes in the estate, one spare 2.1 and a Ford 1.8 td for my sons truck. Handling was virtually unaffected, although with half a ton of metal behind me I wasn't exectly throwing it into corners. The ride though was superb, if you want the ultimate comfort comfort from your XM, carry a couple of engines in the boot! It does knock the performance a bit though.
The trip meter is reading 824 miles and I reckon there are at the very least three gallons left, so even allowing for the filler pipe capacity that's got to be at least 50 mpg. What other car.... Peter.N. -------------------- Used to have:

Blimey Peter. You are really getting the XM bug now.
Not the fist time we've heard of more weight in the back making the ride better. I do remember reading about the guy who loaded up his Bx boot with bricks to make the suspension more 'DS like', apparently it worked well. The question is how can I get this better ride without a vast weight added to the back end! Till next time we meet at the motorway services! Steve -------------------- 96P XM 2.0Turbo Exclusive Green

I have to agree that a bit of weight does make the ride even better.
However you can overdo it........................ I remember (a long long time ago) taking all the back the seats out of my CX Familial filling it with nearly a ton of bicycle chains. The drive from the Midlands to South Wales completely wrecked the radius arm bearings, which in turn scrubbed all the rubber off the back tyres. I really should have hired a van. Hi Steve
'Comfort spheres' are the answer, I have them on the estate but not the hatch and the difference is immediatly apparent. I came across a picture of your car on my computer this morning Andy When I sold my last CX Safari I sent with it a spare engine and gearbox and numerous other spares I had acquired, I think there were also four blokes that came to collect it and as the drove away the rear suspension had barely got off the stops. I think that your radius arm bearings would have been OK if they had any grease in them, probably just finished them off. Peter.N. -------------------- Used to have:
