Thanks guys.
I have to drive it from Herts to London tomorrow so will report back. I've already been warned there's a bit of wheel shudder at 80mph (guess they need balancing...had the same problem on my current S2 until the front tyres were replaced and wheels balanced as part of the service). And the ride is not as smooth as a previous XM he had. He's got all the history and I suspect I'll discover the spheres are due replacing. Then there's the speedo and ABS faults. I intend to sort out both (but out of interest do they check the speedo during the MOT?) Matt -------------------- 1994 S2 CT auto petrol hatch blue, 100k

The speedo is not checked as part of the test.
Congratulations! Hope the car is a good 'un. -------------------- Tim

interestingly i was told that MOTers can NOT touch or move anything in the car so if, say a cig packet, was on the dash in front of, say the ABS light, then it would not fail. I dont believe they actually test the ABS at the wheels.
I've had an intermittent light for years and the mot has never been a problem. Either way switching off and on again clears it and the ABS does actually work. -------------------- 2.5td Exclusive - Emerald green of course

Err that's not quite correct - at least in my case! The crafty sod spotted the abs light on at my last MOT before the car went bang. He had to move quite a bit of stuff just to see it - I had "accidentally" left it there! -------------------- 1996 SX16v Auto. Maroon

The speedo WILL be the sensor on the output of the DRIVERS SIDE drive shaft in te useual place, it will be a dodgy speed sensor, the Xantia suffers the same problem as this, replacement of the sensor should cure the problem
ABS - well the MOT man should and is supposed to check for correct operation of the ABS light, ignition on, flikker while it checks then out, start engine, same again then out... A more simpler way, as theres NO ABS badge on the car, and if your MOT man isn't to fussy, simply tae the bulb out... WITHOUT The light on, the message goes out... so that wont give the game away either.. The message is connected to the light on the dash and DOESNT have its own signal from ABS ECU.... Many thanks for all your replies; here's a belated update. Yes the car was a very good buy for £500; bodywork excellent interior near perfect and mechanically seems very sound indeed.
I will need new spheres all round I think (this will be a first for me, being something of an amateur amateur - is it an easy job?). Despite the advice offered above I'm slightly confused about how best to approach the ABS and speedo issues so I've started a new thread in the electrics section.
