I suppose that as they become rarer the price must go up and the Trade may well be aware that there's a small coterie who think that XMs are the best thing since sliced bread. Let's face it, there's nothing else to touch them for what they do. For example, the Lamborgini Miura may be a better car in Clarkson's eyes, but try loading a sideboard into it, or driving in heavy town traffic for that matter.

Just suppose you've set your heart on a 2.5 XM and there are very few about, I think you'd probably pay anything up to your limit - and beyond - to get the one you want. I know that's where I was five years ago when I bought my V6.

I may be wrong but I suspect that within the next three years the era of cheap XMs will end.

Maybe not a classic, but.....

Derek

One things for sure, i dont think the value of an XM will decrease now, unless bought off the forecourt.
And as with anything, its supply and demand, if supply is greater than demand prices will be rock bottom, if its the other way round prices will go sky high.
Fill a barn while they are still cheapish! laugh.gif

Seems to depend very much on spec. too.

That nice deep bronze 2.0 Turbo Auto hatch that didn't sell on on ebay (starting price £400) and the Exclusive Auto near to me (£450) seem not to sell - presumably because of the automatic g'box? Both seem good value, though still too much to pay.

Whereas I presume someone is willing to pay £1695 for that 2.5 estate because it's a better workhorse and manual?

I'm afraid my car buying motto has always been 'if it blows up the day after I buy it, can I afford to lose what I paid for it?'. That makes my usual ceiling price about £200. biggrin.gif

I'll be quite sad if it is the case that all XMs will eventually move out of the 'VFM' motoring bracket.

I was thinking that, but mindful of the furore I caused last time I stuck my oar in!. Honestly, who could possibly think a 13-year-old, 190k mile car is worth that?

In all honesty though, just because someone has advertised it for that sum, doesn't mean it'll sell for that - or at all!

Yes, all a bit daft when I paid £150 for mine, spent £50 on rockers and a temp sensor to get it running and it went straight through an MOT! It's got less miles on it, too, and a full history. I'd sell it today if I thought I could get that sort of money for it!

I dont want to offend anyone, but to be honest most of us here, feel free to protest, are a bit tight arent we? i know i am! we will buy a car for a few hundred , repair it and then maintain it ourselves. If on the other hand you are not even capable of changing a fuse, then you are more than likely to buy a car off the forcourt, with a warranty and all the peace of mind that brings and pay a premium for it?
all i know is a lot of these 'overpriced' cars do genraly sell, and lets face it whould you rather have a 10 year old mondeo for £1500 off the forcourt or a nice smooth XM???

Honestly? If I had to pay for someone to fix it, and I didn't need the space and towing capability of an XM, I'd buy the Mondeo. I don't think of myself as tight, if there was a modern car that could do what the XM does for me, I'd buy it. I don't see any 13-year-old executive car with 190k on it as worth £1500.

Keep the prices high I say. If you have a bump and have to argue with your insurance company it will be all in your favour.

It's a diesel - 190k miles means it's just broken in.

As a former Ford driver (I've driven two company Ford passenger cars, including a Mondeo, and one privately owned one), I think I can fairly safely say that you'd be worse off - especially if the Ford is a diesel as well.

Over the last 30 years, I've found myself stranded five times. All five times, it was with a Ford.
And three out of these five times were in the last 10 years. With a Ford diesel, with less than 60.000 miles. Ford has its problems.

Apart from that, I cannot think of any reason to worry about a diesel engine that has 200k miles. If the rest of the car and the service history is OK, 200k miles may be the limit for LPG, it might be worrying for a petrol car, but for a relatively modern diesel? Not really.

If I'd be offered a 1995 Mondeo diesel and a 1995 XM diesel for the same money, all else (condition, service history, mileage) being equal, I wouldn't think twice. And not just because I like the XM better, but also because the engines are better.

We've all got stories to tell. I've broken down and been unable to "self-rescue" 8 times in 22 years of driving. All of those 8 episodes were in Citroens, and 3 of them XM diesels. Do I think Citroens are unreliable? No, not really. I'm trying to think in terms of the average man in the street. If I wanted a family car for around £1500, and had to pay someone to look after it, would I buy a comlex, quirky French oddity that would have my local garage running to put up the CLOSED sign as I pulled up, or would I buy a boring Dagenham dustbin that even the AA man can fix - and get parts for!
For the record, the breakdowns were:
1990 - X reg CX Athena, cambelt tensioner exploded
1991 - CX 25 Turbo D Safari, reverse gear selector broke, jammed gearbox
1999 - CX GTI T2, alternator failure at 2AM coming back from London
2000 - XM 24V S1, wiring loom caught fire
2000 - XM 24V S1, A/C compressor failed, shredded drive belt
2002 - XM 2.1TD, head gasket
2005 - XM 2.1TD, LHM leak (more a torrent than a leak!)
2007 - XM 2.1TD, LHM pump belt broke
