Im just doing some searching around to see how i fix my LCD display which should be showing me what gear im in, and i came across this thread.

Its true, Sxs miss out on so many things other Xms have as standard, even small things which you would think only shaved pennies off the cost of the car. Such as the kerb lights in the doors, the one touch button for the drivers window etc etc. All of these surely mean less hassle though.

Sxs do have the dual zone temp, which is fantastic, VSX models have auto temp control, so it adjusts the fan and air temp to achieve the required temperature but only for one temperature control. Although its always puzzeled me how this comes without air con, so it can only chill to outside air temp.

I dont think anyone has mentioned, that the VSX and above models, along with the left hand LCD display, also have the MPG, miles to empty etc reading on the far right of the right LCD display, where the outside temperature appears on the SX models, that is part of the changable display on the VSX models.

The late VSX model we had a couple of years ago had everything, digi air con, cruise etc. The air con was great for the summer, but i did miss the dual zone setting, cruise was nice but i could (and do) easily live without all of its extras it had over the SX. The thing i miss the most are the electric seats, as on a long journey it was nice just to recline a little more or sit more up right at the touch of a button to change posture, was a nice touch.

So, on with my hunting for tips on fixing the LCD display ...

Not all VSX's have MPG display as it depends on the engine management system providing the output signal.

Chris, is your gear selector display missing segments or just not working? if its the same as the S1 one thats in with the oil level and fuel guage etc it will be dry joints on the displays pcb where the long pins are soldered on.

the dot matrix display can be repaired by taking it out and very carfully useing a pencil (not lead pencil as they where banned years ago as rugrats where gettin poisened by the lead content). just an ordinary carbon pencil and carefully "repairing" (cleaning)the little tracks. but be carefull as damage can be done easily so be gentle. i did mune and i had about 6 tracks not working. i have i think 2 not working so i may have another go when i get time. its always the bloody left hand display that naffs up in the s2's ive seen....wonder why. mine doesnt show gearchanges but the displays show a magnitude of other stuf..mpg to go petrol in milage left in tank etc. outside temp radio station volume nanny warnings (handy if boot lid not shut etc) but i have no bulb warnings wich was on an 3l v6 mk1 i had wich i found very usefull..as police on the n,wales border are s%%t hot at useing that excuse to pull you. mind you they pull you if you fart with the window down around here flamin nuiscence they are. but i have to say the other night they had a checkpoint set upat 2.00am i was behinf a new bmw and a lexus. and behind me was a merc. unusual collection of cars in one place i know but the story goes they waved the two in front over and let me carry on and waved in the one behind! maybe the irish where moving cars etc etc or something else but i felt sort of nice inside to see the posh crew yanked in.. he he could have been clarkson . hope so as hes not a fan of the xm.....all though hamster is...

mine has the circuit ribbon in it.... If you pull it apart and firmly push all the connections down against the circuit boards it will work perfectly ..................................... For about 2weeks (given effort to get the damn thing out, that really p!$$ed me off). I'm trying to think of a way to permently apply pressure to the ribbon. Maybe a plastic gusset along the length of it, then wrap it with some MIG wire and twist it the wire until it's really tight holding the glued down ribbon on tightly (ie: keeping good contact).
