Hi Ciaran

Sadly my XM education has never stretched to understanding which wheels are "starfish" ones and which are the "wobble-web" ones. Currently I am still using "Monte-Carlo's" but if this is to continue much longer I will have to buy another later exclusive car with good tyres on it. Otherwise I will have to start using the stockpiled "Etoile's" or heaven forbid buy some new tyres. At current prices XM's are not fetching the price of 5 good servicable tyres. I gave Paul my only set of 24 valve ones last time he came because I took against the look of them. Either that or the tyres were a bit worn or not matched pairs.

John

Hi John,

The 'wobbly web' ones are these:

Are they the ones you referred to as Etoile?

Hi Cairan

Yes, Etoile is the Citroen name for them. Those are the first version with the plastic centre cap as most Etoile alloys are. There cannot have been many of the later solid centre version as the change was made so late on in XM production.

The one's pictured are solid centres on a W plated car! smile.gif

I don't know why Citroen bothered keeping the pretence of separate centres when it's solid!? huh.gif

Hi Andrew

Thanks for pointing out that the later etoile wheels have the circle mark on the centres. Not very sensible to make them look the same as the different types require different wheel bolts.

Looks flat but it isn't - whilst the slope isn't as bad as the exaggerated angle of the picture, I think
all the weight is bearing down on the front making it look flat. All the cars I park here look the same.

And the winner of the "Most difficult to clean properly wheel" is ......... the Monte-Carlo!

By the way, Phil, welcome to Club XM Forum. Hope you stick around and maybe rejoin the ranks later.

I dunno Derek, have you ever had a set of those S1 SEI jobs? There's more wee turns and crevices in them than a rabbit warren. I have a toothbrush for mine, and even then I can never get them properly cleaned laugh.gif

Thank you thank you thank you for clearing that up.

THESE are the rims I want, rather than the ones on the XM in my sig. Now I know what to look for. This alone is worth subscribing to this forum!

Thanks!

Hi Peterh

Glad to help with the explanation and that others provided the photos.

Do not forget about the spare wheel and getting the right wheelbolts to match the wheels as I think there are at least 5 types that Citroen fitted to XM's over the years.

Mk1 tapered steel bolts with short heads for solid plastic wheel trims (bolts hidden).
Mk1/early Mk2 flat face alloy wheel bolts for thick alloy wheels with centre hole. (Note that as the spare for this set of alloy wheels Citroen also supplied a special steel wheel with flat face welded inserts to suit these bolts).
Mk2 tapered steel wheel bolts with chromed long heads (bolts showing).
Mk2 flat face short thread alloy wheel bolts for solid centre alloy wheels.
Mk2 composite flat & tapered wheel bolts for the later solid centre alloy. These bolts also fit standard steel wheels so that a special steel spare is not needed for a set of alloys.

John
