Just thought i would chip in here, my 2l auto gets 21mpg no matter what i do on the island, on the drive over to ireland this year doing 70-80-90 ish i got 39mpg from winchester where i filled up to bantry bay, when i went back the second time with a boot full and 3 people i got 41mpg doing between 55 and 70. this was leaving the isle of wight at 3am though both times though so i didnt hit any traffic. Before the engine re build the most i got was 37mpg doing 55mph all the way from scotish boarders to portsmouth. D -------------------- 92 xm 20i prestige auto (modified)R.P 5678

Thats pretty impressive MPG really, on a long run at 70-80 mine will do about 38MPG, stick to 60 and it achieves 40. Around town it does about 22-25MPG but it rarely gets confinded to just town use now.
I think a manual would probably only benefit MPG very slightly, and mostly in town when you only really get into 1st and 2nd in the auto. Yours will be the 8V is it? Where as mine is the 16v, i was under the impression that the 16v was better on fuel. Seems it may not be that way! yeah mine is the 8v and on the motorway the torque converter locks apparenty so there should be no difference in economy between manual and auto there.
That is calculated mpg by the way mine doesnt have the fuel computer. 16v's are more fuel efficient than 8's but mine has been played with a little so that will make some difference, having the ecu chipped (i havent yet) etc will give better engine efficiency and thus less throttling and hence less fuel used. Yes i think the torque converter locks up in both 3rd and 4th. So 1st and 2nd dont lock, which i think explains the higher town consumption than the manuals. In the Xm brochures there is a very slight difference in the auto and manual on the motorway speeds. I think this is due to the extra weight of the auto box cars, as i think the final gearing is the same?

MMMM interesting question actually, being only four speed i would have thought that the first few gears would be a different ratio im not sure if the final drive is or not though...........

Personal taste. My car owning history is a 50/50 split. The cars that you needed to grab by the scruff of the neck and really drive (240Z, 911, Skyline) were all manual. The cars that simply convey you from point 'A' to point 'B' have been auto, for the simple reason that stirring the gear lever in such a scenario is a waste of effort. It's also very frustrating to be sat in 5 miles of traffic on the A12 or 10 miles on the M25 with your clutch leg shaking like the thighs on an arthritic labrador. Today's autos are also seriously smooth and now have more gears (seven in the S-Class) than any equivalent manual - once you've had a proper modern slush you'd not go back. No, the 'box in my XM isn't exactly the height of sophistication but it does me and my commute very nicely. -------------------- 97 'R' XM 2.0i SX Saloon Auto

Yes, its personal taste. I agree with you, the autos are so much easier in traffic, not to mention dont wear out like clutches can do if mistreat.
I still prefer the control of manuals, but its nice to get into the Xm and relax, sit back and let it do its job! I was reading the other day, how much the S2 Xantia auto boxes progressed from the S1 and Xms. They have sensors to know how your driving, for example in the Xm, often when pulling up to a road junction in town, its in 2nd and you lift off and it drops into third even though your stopping. It would be nice if the Xms gearbox was a bit more up to date. Don't you find the requirement to hit the precise speed to get the changes up under any load
and traffic conditions very irritating and tiring on the Xm autobox. And if you have the misfortune to get stuck behind the guy in front who's gearing at 43mph gets him his purple patch optimum mpg, you're left screaming (both in revs and in gnashing teeth...) Bloody Xm auto's; downright pain when they work and even MORE of a pain when they don't.... Andrew |

Exactly! For example: A few weeks ago i got stuck behind an artic on a very narrow twisty country lane, with no hope of passing. He was doing around 40 all the way. Given that the Xm changes to 4th at about 42mph it was constantly going from 3rd to 4th to 3rd to 4th etc. So i ended up just selecting 3rd until i found the room to pass. Its also a pain that in 40 limits you always have to exceed them to get into top, when most people stick to the limits you are then in 3rd! Luckily it changes to 3rd at 30mph. Which fustrates the life out of me. As i said, i like the control of a manual gearbox. Don't they call this a no brainer? The manual is a far nicer long term 'box to live with but in grind along stop start nose to tail commuting where you're lucky to actually remotely see the posted speed limits the auto wins. It's down to how much effort you really fancy making or perhaps how comfortable you need to get in certain circumstances of your motoring life. The manual may be a longer term option in terms of longevity too but that's a whole new ballgame and usually a thread where the two diametrically opposed camps agree to differ... Anyhow, I drive most manuals like an auto anyhow, 1st or 2nd to get rolling, 3rd to get anywhere and 5th for comfortable 'loping' and economy. Ah ha, i may have just answered my own question!

I think if you passed your test in a manual they're not really any 'effort' as such but you do become aware of their shortcomings: the fact they're a bitch if you encounter stop/strat traffic (and particularly on a steep hill, as is the case leaving my road in the mornings), and in cases where it simply doesn't suit the nature of the car. Wifey's C1 being a manual makes the same kind of sense as a bus being auto

We have arranged to go and see the white estate on saturday.
Its exactly the spec we have been wanting - a diesel estate with air con, it will be ideal for getting our dogs in. Plus its the colour we wanted, which is a bonus! They are going to check the shperes pressures and give it a years MOT, hopefully before the weekend. Its a 500 mile round trip to go and see it, so if we like it we will want to bring it back the same day. Price, what do people think its really worth? I would like to know its realistic value? So, any advice on that one? Anything specific to look out for on the 2.5TD?
