My first XM - 1995 XMX, Orga 6713, had the security pad. I always used it (9 years) but simply typed in the code to by-pass it when the car went for service.
My present vehicle does not have the immobilizer and I had a great laugh with the dealer when I bought it and I observed no-one would want to steal an XM anyway XMs sold in Japan never had alarm either. Only expensive Beemers and Mercs get stolen and are exported to China -------------------- 2000 XM 3.0 V6 24v Exclusive Auto 70k km (LHD; ORGA 8569)

Hi All
To try to clarify there are three variants of the UK keypad system for XM's. The earliest, the "D" type was fitted to some Mk1's and the keypad is more robust with plastic rather than rubber membrane keys. A well as the user selectable 4 digit security number that is stored in static RAM in the main engine ECU the system can be switched to a fixed 4 digit garage code (immobiliser off). Neutral mode, often called garage code is selected by changing the confidential code to 0000. With this system the delay for wrong 4 digit entry is 1 minute before the sequence can start again. When you make a code change both old and new codes are valid until you restart the engine. With the early Mk 2 cars a virtually identical immobiliser system was used. The only change was to a rubber membrane keypad ("D/N" type) with an extra method of selecting Neutral mode. Switch ignition on, enter your confidential code then press the D/N key (Defer/Neutral) for 2 seconds. Neutralisation is confirmed by 4 "beeps". Lock-out after 3 wrong 4 digit entries remains at 1 minute. Then during the 1996 model year Citroen improved the security of the Mk2 immobiliser system. These changes can be recognised by the "S" type keypad. The wrong code lock-out became 30 minutes and the garage code became a separate variable 4 digit code additional to the main code so that the immobiliser remained in use in this state. The handbook at this stage makes no mention of deferred locking or bypass of the keypad by plip. As the garage code is now a separate selectable 4 digit number it becomes very important when buying an XM to be certain the car is operating with the main code and not the garage code or you could find yourself with a locked-up ECU. For the 1997 model year plip bypass and C1C/C0C commands were added to the immobiliser system. Just to remind again. These comments apply to UK cars only, Citroen fitted country specific immobiliser systems to XM's. John
That's useful info - I have often wondered why the Plip bypass could not be set on my 96 2.1TD despite having the instructions in the owner's manual on how to set it up. Maybe its because my car was first registered at least one year after manufacture so it ended up being a 1996 model issued with a 1997 handbook?? Very useful info. I have what must be the early D type, and I've never known the code as I never enter it. I'm paranoid that if I change the battery I'll be locked out!

Hi Alphadave
Check to see if the keypad is unplugged. If is not connected up then you should have no problems with the ECU suddenly looking for a code. John -------------------- An interest in 2.5TD's.

mine came with the keypad disconnected. so, with heart in mouth i re-connected it. i then used the standard factory code of 0000....... after observing the green led come on and the red one with the beep go out i tentatively turned the ignition key and joy of joys it worked! your right on one thing........its a heartstopping moment .......... mine is an t reg and i can confirm it does have 2 numbers. one for garage and one for private use. both of which are independantly programable to any 4 digit number you want. what some people do is set it to service mode and then disconnect the pad. but mine can also be programmed to completely turn off and not require a code at all which means i dont have to disconnect it at all. so you can say it has 3 modes.......off...service...private. one thing i havnt tried yet is.....do the deadlocks work when the immobiliser is off or disabled....going to have a nose at that one tomorrow. i use mine every day and its a bit of a pose thing when i get passengers that have never been in the car before !! i find the suspension riseing after they get in and i start the engine has worried more than one or two people before now though. this car has produced a lot of laughs for me. what i find amuseing is that some people think its brand new after they get in????? thats an late s2 xm for you...ahead of its time
