I have recently returned to an XM after a break of around a year. The car I have bought (2.1td 1992) has been standing unused, but only for around 3 months.
The problem I an having is that for about the first 20 to 30 mins when driving from cold, the clutch action is really good. Very smooth and no heavier than my previous XM's. It bites nicely and just feels 'right'. Then, the pedal goes really stiff and creaky, sometimes not returning back up of its own accord. The creaking noise seems to be from either up in the pedal box or from the pivot point on the bulkhead although I appreciate seizure or stiffness elsewhere could put strains on these areas. Ive tried lubricating the actuating pivot (gearbox end) and around the pedal area, but I'm not really nimble enough to get my head right in there. I feel the problem is caused by something being affected by heat when the engine is fully warmed up, possibly a bush expanding or similar, but I could be barking up the wrong tree altogether. Any information appreciated. Thanks. |

The pivot shaft in the bellhousing sits in plastic busheswhich could be causing this problem if they're worn. I can't see the pedal pivot being worn enough to cause this, the force on the release bearing would surely overcome any stiffness there? The only other possibility is the cable. Is it routed correctly? Maybe getting hot from being too close to the exhaust?

Thanks for your reply Neil.
I had thought of the things you mentioned and actually thought the pedal felt a bit better today. However the pedal has now gone down and stayed there!! it can be lifted back up very easily, and I note that the cable is intact. I'm now thinking something has gone 'pop' in the adjuster mechanism. I cant find any info on the spring arrangement (inside the car) and cant see (or feel) the pivot on the bulkhead very easily. There is a spring arrangement around the outer cable, which I have seen references to in other postings, but it is'nt possible to see if anything has become damaged or dislodged in this area. |

or broken fingers on the clutch pressure plate?
Typically the pedal stops returning all the way is a sign of it being near to worn out, I guess a problem with the release bearing or pressure plate could also cause it. Unfortunately dismantling would be the only way to verify. regards Dave -------------------- G-reg XM V6SEi saloon, light blue, RP4764
