If that car was here in the UK, it would have been either vandelised or scrapped, Ive never known a car in the UK sit that long to get a covering of dust that much, unless its in Private ownership.

hmm, looking again at the pic, the gaiter doesn't look like it fits the strut top... is smaller diameter or appears to be. in fact it seems to have been rubbing against the flat part of the base disc. Also the tops I've seen look different on the underside, but my experience has been of the earlier versions. Did the late revision top look like this underneath? if so, maybe the gaiter is wrong one?

I'd say give them a close inspection before removing the straps, just in case, wouldn't want a big failure just after getting it going. Check the strap clearance with the car stationary by turning the wheels from lock-to-lock with the bonnet up to see if they are contacting against the top. When driving there would be less clearance as the top takes some of the strain of absorbing the movement of the strut/car.

Do they really? The protruding ring, or would you call it a step, on the bottom of the bracket appears to have rusted away, so the boot (gaiter) no longer has anything to grip onto. Bracket and boot look original to me.

Yes, I have to agree with you; nice car. Drove about 10km today, the engine iddle is really fine, steering is strange to me! brakes are superb and the susp seams to be trying to self leverage sometimes. had no time to check everything I want but in a few days and with your help I´ll be more familiarized with this fine piece of engineering. Nobody can be happy all the time, I found a hole in the heating pipe (the reason for low water level) and think about using a hose and two brackets to solve this problem meanwhile, see pic. Asked for some parts at dealer today and found they're thieves. Unfortunatelly parts in Brazil are very expensive.

if someone has any tip on how to replace the pipe, please let me know.

There are lots of these cars, similar vintage, very clean and well maintained, with low mileage, for sale in Japan
The reason they are so clean I think is because of very stringent regulations for maintenance

These cars are not dirt cheap like you see in the UK, but they have, like I said, very low mileage and most are in perfect condition

Stange, the car seems like it has received a good deal of severe hits underneath (look oil carter (UK: sump), exhaust downpipe, middle of subframe...), I wonder if in the past a strut top had failed while driving, and car came face-to-face with the road surface -and perhaps that's why terrified owner put those rushed-in top protectors afterwards- ?? Could just have been a simple out-of-the-road accident of course, not related to strut top failure, but just wondering.

BTW it's true this strut top looked weird to me also from underneath. Not like anything I've seen on an XM. Has he put Xantia tops perhaps?
