Hi all

Well I thought this is great news for any XM owner so I *have* to announce it here. It's about the well-known problem of strut top failure on XMs. Laszlo Torok, the XM specialist from Hungary (some will know from XM-L), has designed and is now selling a frame protecting your bonnet from the eventual strut top failure. Most importantly though -I think- is the safety factor added: I always have dreaded the moment such a failure would happen, but with this installed, one should be freed from such fears while driving his XM. I always have been thinking of making something similar myself but just don't have the tools to do it... I was impressed that they tested the strenght of the thing by lifting the XM from it!!! You can see more of the item in his website: link

And I bought the first one for sale on ebay last night!! Here: ebay
There should be more soon.

That's what Laszlo wrote me a few days ago:

"Together with 2 engineers we did a bonnet protector for XM struts:

I plan to make a mass-series production, and sell it smile.gif I hope there will be some interest for it. It is very strong, we hooked my friends 2.1td XM to it, and lifted it, and the car moved like a bell smile.gif Was funny smile.gif

It is ready for mass-production. We constructed 5 devices to make the production easier. Today I'll write a small instruction manual about installation (it's childplay, you don't need to remove sphere/pipe) and ready. The price will be about eur 60 for a one car set.
Could you introduce it please? Im ready to accept orders, production takes about 2-3 days. Paying could be done with paypal. (not checked the postal rate, i will do it today, because need to measure the weight of the device).

It was designed by 2 engineers (and i was the 3rd one wink.gif. It is really a great stuff, I installed one into my XM of course.

The designers/manufacturers of the device have a factory, which produces the side-airbag starting patrons (special shaped metal pipes) for Toyota/Mazda... - we used most of the tools from there-. The upper side is from steel, and the thread on the steel made with a rolling device, not a generic thread cutter - to make it stronger-. Locking nuts are spherical shaped to make possible to put it without even removing the original nuts from the strut top. The underside is from iron, curved with again a special device to this kind of shape.

I ordered 5 pairs from my friend to manufacture, and will be painted with a good quality 2 component paint.
"

So there you go. I guess he will be putting more for sale on ebay. As soon as I receive and install mine I'll report here.

cheers
George

It's been well thought out, George, leaving enough lateral room for the head top to articulate. And it certainly looks substantial.
