Yeah 2 pack really is toxic, very toxic! Be careful with it. I've had trouble using plastic sheet for masking as well, the paint doesn't stick to it very well and can be blown off in flakes with the gun. I prefer to use brown paper. Probably more expensive but less risky.

However what you've done looks really nice. smile.gif

Yep,

that's why I've only ever used laquer in the past. This is the first time I've ever used 2pack paints (what a revelation !!)... Lets see, painters suite, nitrile gloves, air fed mask, blower fans, sealed up pressurised heated booth (ie: plastic on the walls taped together laugh.gif ).

Paint never touches me, and I'm breathing external air ! I have my big compressor hooked to the gun, and my father little toy oiless compressor way outside the spray area feeding the air fed mask (it only just keeps up).

seeya,
Shane L.

Hi Guys,

well I gotta say, masking absolutely sucks big time..... Damn it took some time to tape this b@stard up.... And I'm ffffaaaaaaarrrr from a perfectionist :roflmao: "Close enough... she'll be right mate :clown:".

The effort that went into this was huge. Both the front and back of all doors have been masked like the hatch, the sunroof opened, the spoiler taped down and tape around the edge. Every last bit of glass has been taped around. The blue tape is the plastic fineline tape. I found brushcutter cord worked ok under the top of the windscreen seal. The rear quater panels were mongrel, I managed to get some automotive wire under some of the seals to lift them. most I ended up taping.

Gee's I'm in no hurry to do this again. Once I finally finished all of this, I taped newpaper over the top of the film where ever I would be spraying.

Note: I have added a couple of flouro lights behind the plastic on the walls. I just couldn't see the side of the car otherwise.

seeya,
Shane L.

The base layed nice, except for that damn mirror again. There is still paint leftover to re-do that.... I'm not sure how to stop it crinkling up through .... hmmm....

The majority of the clear layed down really well. I'll have to wait until I get it out into the sun tomorrow and see what it's like. I may need to wet sand some of it.

I guess it's ok for a car that's been painted in a shed laugh.gif

Well I think I just got it painted in time. The masking tape around the hatch and back door where I started was just starting to leave it's adhesive behind. I was concerned about the time period the tapes been on (over a week). I've used 4 big rolls of masking tape, 3 33m x 1.8 metre rolls of film masking the car (that's probably 500metres of tape, and 90metres of plastic film  ).

user posted image

I've found a run in the drivers door, most of the car will probably need a gentle wet sand to denib it. You can see (very) minor orange peel in the piccie above. This is the roof. Yep, spring must be here, look at the bloody pollen on the car already sad.gif sneezing seasons here ...

user posted image

All the time and effort in taping was most certainly worth it. This is the plastic bit above the rear 'C' pillars that the paint always fades/falls off. Look how perfectly that plastic tapes made the lines... You can't tell it's been painted !

Shane L

Well I've wet sanded the whole bonnet with 1200grit... It was very blunt and worn by the time I'd sanded the grit out.... now I couldn't understand how this is possible

http://www.autobody101.com/forums/viewtopi...?t=9636&start=0 the superduty cutters only.

user posted image

This is a really really aggressive cutter with a wool pad (so even more aggressive).

Looks good right ?

user posted image

What about this angle ... scratchy .... hugely scratchy ....

user posted image

Ok fine cutters ....

user posted image

Looks great right ??

user posted image

scratchy as sh1t ... I'll re-sand it with 1500-2000 that's been soaking for a while in the bucket of water to remove the 1200grit scratches.

There is two runs I need to fix, one here and one on a door (no surprise where it was to dark to see properly when spraying).

400 grit paper to knock the run down without sanding the surrounding area ... worked well.

The razor blade work incredibly .... don't get carried away though rolleyes.gif

pretty much gone... Spot where I cut deeply right up against the edge... :clown:

I think you'll always get swirls with a machine polish. Also a finish will always look worse under artificial light than natural.

Nah.... I'll get rid of all the swirls.... promise cool.gif

Wet sand with 1500, then possibly 2000. In order to get rid of the swirl I need to finish with a polishing pad and micro-fine cutters. I've just had a couple of finishing/polishing guys tell me not to use the woolen buff.... Only use foam, so I'll do that too smile.gif

Well she's done.... I don't know what user posted image user posted image idiot scratched sh!t out of it when sanding, but it appears the initial sanding with 1200grit did a good number on it.... I think it was the pollen scratching it.... Everything else will get pedantically washed and dried to prevent this (and I'll start at 1500grit).

There's still some minor scratches if you get it in the light, but far better than 99.9997% of cars on the road .... I was going to fix this by cutting just those scratches before I thought "what the hell am I doing .... this is no showcar, it'll be crunched in a carpark the first time it's driven.................. Just like every single other car I've ever painted....".

The rest of the car will be a peice of cake, 'cos some idiot won't scratch sh!t out of it when initially sanding it back rolleyes.gif

Hi Shane,

I understand your determination to get it right, we all know that as soon as you put it back on the road hundreds of people will arrive with magnifying glasses to examine every inch for invisible imperfections.

You bluddy perfectionist!!!

I'm not perfectionist ... People that know me would laugh hysterically if they heard someone say that laugh.gif

Ok ... roof done, tops of doors and hatch done .... Time to put the ramps back into the shed so I don't have to crawl around on my belly to get to the verticle panels smile.gif

Well the passenger sides done... Hopefully I'll get the drivers side done over the next few day so I can re-assemble the damn thing and just drive it ! I can see the Citroens designers p!$$ing themselves laughing at any poor b@stard that tries to sand or cut this car with all those damn indentations down it sides blink.gif I'm amazed I haven't burnt an edge anywhere yet... Plenty of "side on" use of the buffer to.
