Had a few minutes to spare and was actually checking the specs to see that listing on this
website and realised the 'contributor' Mimaxa or somesuch, and several other repeat
offenders, have totally hijacked the guestbook listing with endless page after page of BS!

Is there anything that can be done to sort the wheat from the chaff here?

Andrew

I had never looked at this guest book till now. As you say, it's been infiltrated, but I don't know by what. I am no expert on this, but can't you just erase everything and make the guest book accessible on certain conditions only? It looks like you can't just have an open guest book anymore which can be abused by any imbecile of any level.

They're automated spam bots, posting what are supposed to be HTML adverts with images and links, but as HTML is disabled on the guestbook pages, it just displays the raw HTML instead.

I never knew we had a guest book, where is it?

Ciaran, I am in awe of your computer knowledge; what's a spambot? I have visions of a large rear end (female of course) made of tinned meat! Can't be right!

Hi Derek,

Unfortunately the meaning of spam bot isn't half as funny as your vision of it

Basically, any 'bot', spam or otherwise, is an automated script, or 'robot' program which can perform whatever monotonous task they're programmed for - in this case, filling people's guestbooks with crap.
Sadly their main use these days is to pedal spam, virii, and other such nasties, but 'bots' have been used for ages.

I still much prefer your explanation though, that one had me in stitches  biggrin.gif

The guestbook is GOING.

I've been seeing abuse of it by spammers and similar increase over time (I get an email every time someone adds a message).

It's probably why you don't see so many guest books these days.

All offending IPs will be banned from the server shortly

To be honest Chris, I don't think many have ventured anywhere beyond the main
threads on the main discussion page!

The guestbook was a nice idea pre spam but this forum does just that on the introductions
area anyway so I can't see there being any loss to the site. I think the front end welcome
page and the reference section is still an invaluable asset that isn't used or possibly
signposted as much as it should; the fuse table and general specs you set for sure!

All the best,
Andrew
