Turbo Oil Leak

Hello all,

My 2.1TD has begun leaking oil from the turbo area. A (non-Citroen) mechanic who looked at it has suggested it is coming from a defective shaft seal inside the turbo, but the Indie I sometimes use says it is probably coming from a flange gasket or seal. Am I right in thinking that if the leak was internal the oil would be sucked into the manifold and burnt? The car doesn't blow smoke, and is running fine - it is just making a mess on my driveway and using a fair amount of oil.

Anybody else had a similar problem?

There is a hose fitted to the turbo which has a flange gasket - or 2 - (one at each end probably). There is also a metal pipe for the oil under pressure going into the turbo. This has the usual flanged ends with nuts. They may have looosened, but I would suggest that you check the low-ptressure retun pipe for ageing or for a loose hose clip. I think it is unlikely that you will be able to get replacement piping off the shelf, due to the spec. which is required for the high temperatures involved.

I haven't had any problem with my 2.1TD in this area (my oil puddle comes from the gearbox!).

I believe the turbo is a bit of a pig to get at and changing it probably means taking out the engine although I'm sure some double jointed Houdini will have found a way of doing it.

The flexible rubber oil drain pipe, (Item 4 on drawing attached), part no 38108 (Mk2 XM), is listed at £24.22 (inc VAT) from Citroen UK.

Cheers, thanks guys. Looks like it will be a weekend job when the weather clears up. Hopefully it isn't something inside the turbo.
