Whilst doing a Belt change on my 1996 2.1TD i noticed the H-Pump was covered in LHM everywhere. It was dripping off the unit but was wet all over.

It could have been like this for years as i have only just accuired the car.

Is there any comon faults with the pumps or areas to look out for ?

I'm just about to drain down the LHM and fill with hydraflush will this be a good time for further inspection ?
whats your thoughts ?

Thanks

I have heard of leaky pumps but never experienced one. The only thing you can do really is to give it a good clean and then watch. The pumps are not very easily repairable but you should be able to pick one up from a scrap yard. New ones are available for about £150.00

as Peter says, give it a clean and then check - may just be the HP union that's weeping.

How's the accumulator sphere - is the regulator ticking a lot, or at all? If the sphere is flat, that'll put a lot more strain on the pump and can result in it failing, or the pipe at the flare.

A refurb pump from Plieades would sort it, or maybe from a scrapper. Only thing with a scrapper is knowing what condition the pump was in

I may be wrong, but I think there are only four places that could be leaking: the seal at the drive input, the suction pipe, the two HP connections. I suppose it's possible the casing might be cracked but highly unlikely.

the pump can fail with cracking of the housing round the shaft if the accumulator is run flat for too long - result of pipe hammer etc when there's no gas left to absorb the pressure surges.

Question is :

Do i have to drain down the Hydraflush to take the pump off ?

My plan then is to clean up the pump in situ and just observe the weeping then report back.

No, just either lift the feed pipe obove the reservoir to stop it syphoning out or bung something in the end. You will however need to bleed it when you refit it.

Connect the inlet hose to the pump then disconnect the other end from the reservoir and fill the pipe up with fluid and try to reconnect it before it all drains away, then start the engine, you may have to do this several times before the hydraulic pressure light goes out.
