Full version here....
http://lez.briddon.googlepages.com/citroenxmtimingbelt Forum only displays first ten images, as I found out after 20 minutes of trying to find why my images would not display....... Changing the XM Diesel 2.1 Timing belt the easy way.... Its not that hard, I hope this simple guide will show you that its not a dealer job, that it can be done at home on the drive with simple tools and a bit of graft. Don't forget good weather and lots of warm drinks help, unless too warm, then lots of non alcoholic cold drinks help... Start by removing the alternator belt and lhm pump belt. You need to remove the bottom pully wheel, the bolt can be a tough nut to crack, excuse the pun, a good socket, and a large breaker bar helps, and in the past i have had them so tight I have had to wedge the socket/bar against the ground and flick the starter motor, but i dont think you should do that........ LHM pump (2 bolts and the pipes), Alternator (1 big bolt, the adjuster, and the wires) and the plastic covers from the timing belt area, top is easy, bottom half should now be easy that the pulley wheel is gone.. Now its time to look at the old belt, heres mine..... Insert some locking bolts, standard bolts will do, just turn engine until they line up, insert bolts, one in the cam pully And another in the diesel pump, I normally dont lock the crank, but its good practice. At this point mark the position of the belt relative to the pulley, I know its locked in place, and should not move, but like the saying measure twice cut once, mark it in paint, dont screw engine.... Now the diesel pump pulley And the bottom pulley Now slacken the tensioner, undo a few turns the 10mm nut, and the allan/hex head bolt, its a bit of a pita to get at, but can be done, a quality tool is essential, it can be stubborn.... Once you have it undone, remove belt and look for damage, try to find what caused it if you have any, you dont want the new belt damaged..... Loose threads, which is why I Was changing it Transfer paint marks from old belt to new belt, exactly, count them if you must. This is my new belt, no i dont know why it looks funny... <snip> [COLOR=blue][SIZE=7]COMMENTS WELCOME, I may have missed something...[SIZE=7] -------------------- |

Nice Tutorial Lez, HOwever,
Theres no need to mark up the Crank position, as the 2.1 is an XU family engine, there is actually a locking position on the flywheel, the hole is behind the fly wheel, locking with an 8 (I think) allen key!. Its obviously more accessable removing the starter, then of course ALL 3 are locked solid and theres NO WAY the crank can move out of position. I SERIOUSLY WOULD lock the crank unless your VERY carefull! The crank only needs to be ONE tooth out on the belt for it to either hit a valve or two OR simply WILL NOT start. I've tried a few times ommitting the crank bolt with no availe, and had to re-time back up and lock the crank. VERY GOOD Pics! Nice and clear. I did a belt on a 2.1td not so long ago and found it an easyer belt tensioner then the 1.9 units in the Xantias. Rgds C -------------------- 1993 K Reg 3.0 V6 12 Valve Auto (Green) LPG S1.5 SORNd
