New clutch time on sprog's Landy.

Genuine OE clutch less than £100; Four engine mountings and a clutch slave kit (which included piston and spring) --- Change out of £20 !!!!!!!

Kind of makes me wonder why , given that pretty much most clutches are of the same basic pattern, an XM one is three times odd the price. Not had to do a 2.5 yet, but I'll bet it's nowhere as beefy as this one we've done today.

Hi Mike

Most Land Rover spares seem to be relativly cheap, but I don't think I would like to drive one very far, although to be fair the last one I drove was made in about 1947.

You would win your bet, hands down! No contest - I think the price reflects the rarity of demand for them as few people would have the equipment to take out the engine - recommended method - or the lift to do the job from underneath.
It cuts costs if you do (or have done) the cambelts at the same time. They are so awkward to do in situ.
Don't ask how I know!

Hi Techman.

I'm kind of thinking one step back, really. You come to build a car like the 2.5, the power output of which is well within normal automotive limits. Why do you specify a (relatively ?) unique clutch, when there are already in existence probably countless clutches -- ready to go, off the shelf --- that would do the job just fine ?
Only logical answer to me is that you are trying to keep replacement sales in house. Trouble is with something like the 2.5, by most of them get round to needing one, the owners aren't thinking in terms of dealer prices and when you add in the labour or time cost, the car simply gets binned -- so no one wins.

If 'they' are at all serious about all this environmental stuff, this is just the kind of manufacturing practice that wants stopping --- unique bits for every model and cars so complex that in future one duff box will condemn them. We've already seen that, in reality, computer plug in diagnosis isn't some 100% miracle fix. Even where it does work -- say it finds a duff abs sensor, you then find some prat has designed a steel case object to sit directly in an ally housing, exposed to the wet.

Do you know, I think I'll go and complete my application to join the Luddites.
