Hi All
Been having trouble getting the right size of Track Rod End for one of the 2.5's. Anyone know of suppliers other than Citroen? Even my local dealer could not identify which XM's took which type, said the catalogue for Mk2's listed a type A (18mm) and a type B (22mm). Though I might like to take the existing one off bring it in and then put the correct on on back order as neither were in stock. Checked three of cars this evening and found a V6 with the smaller size, a 2.5 with the larger and another 2.5 with one of each. Anyone know where to find the definitive answer on what fits what? Hi XMexc.
As far as i knew the 2.5TD was the only one with the 22mm Track rod end. The one which you have which has one of each is an aberration. Maybe the PO changed the rod itself for the wrong size? For what its worth both my 2.5TD's have 22mm threads. I looked on both the microfiche and the service.citroen.com but there's absolutely no guidance as to which model has the 22mm or the 18mm. It does however make the distinction between sizes for both the rods and the ends though. Sorry thats not much help. Cheers noz -------------------- '10 '59' C5 2.0 HDi Exclusive Tourer Metallic Grey

Hi Noz
Have had another look at the odd ball with different size ends. A PO has changed the whole of the suspension on that side for Mk1 bits. The give away that made me realise what had happened was the smaller size of the plastic cap over the Mk1 strut head nut. Have ordered a 22mm end today from Citroen. Not much help but for reference my 1997 2.0 CT was supposed to have 18mm ends according to all the catalogues at the motor factors.
It turned out to have 22mm ends My local factor just said if there was a next time he'd order in both types and just return the unused pair- might be worth asking your factor to do this? Mine were Quinton Hazell parts btw. OR just take your cheap digital vernier and measure the thread on your exisitng rod ends before ordering! My V6 has 22mm track rods. The track rod ends are 18mm threads. I know because I measured the track rod ends rather than the track rods before ordering and of course got the wrong size first time round.

On the subject of track rod ends, has anyone had a problem with replacements from GSF? I replaced one on the red car a little while back and it was to long, I have it screwed in as far as it will go and the tracking is only just about. The one I removed was two or three threads from the end.

I've just fitted my SECOND replacement NS track rod end in less than a year
Strangely, the offside was done at the same time and has been fine. I've e-mailed QH to see if there's a quality issue with the rubber boots. Exact same item - Yorkshire motor factor = £12. Dundee motor factor =£8. Hmmmmm. Good to be further North -------------------- '99 'V' XM 2.0 CT VSX Auto Estate RP 8360 Green.

Hi Wirdy
Something wrong here. I noticed people complaining of the same problem on the French Car Forum. I think its all down to the rubber boots failing. The original tracke rod ends last for 100k++. I wonder if genuine ones are any better? Peter.N. -------------------- Used to have:

if it's just the boot and the actual unit itself is ok, you 'might' be able to get new ones - have a scan on fleabay - you'll have to take a bit of a guess on the diameters, or measure up before ordering. A local factor may even have some.
I have a pack somewhere, can't remember the sizes now though. regards Dave -------------------- G-reg XM V6SEi saloon, light blue, RP4764

Thanks Dave, TBH the new track rod end took me 20 mins to change as I had greased everything last time and I have a proper ball joint splitter that cracked the taper in 20 secs. I am aware that you can get boots separately but it had been about 3 months since I last had the front wheels off so there could have been 3 months of grime inside the ball joint. I agree this problem is down to the 'rubber'. Ever since the material on CV joint boots changed to that flexible (neoprene?) type stuff you don't get split CV boots much anymore do you? they need to use this same stuff for ALL suspension rubbers too me thinks. Helpful to know there is more than just me suffering this prob. This post has been edited by wirdy on March 28, 2008 10:59 pm -------------------- '99 'V' XM 2.0 CT VSX Auto Estate RP 8360 Green.
