Hi Tim,

To me the wooliness suggests a wastegate stuck open. A bit of TLC and there should be a car that's as cheap to run as a diesel whist giving the smoothness and driving pleasure of the TCT engine.

Get thee behind me, satan!

I must not buy another XM, I must not buy another XM, I must mot b.....

Thanks for the suggestion Derek. I think at £500 and with the seller knowing little about the car I shall leave it for now. I'll keep an eye on it - see if the price drops.

Hi guys, this reply goes back a way up this thread and could well be more appropriately placed with the meet up/gathering thread (feel free to transfer it).

Does anyone know of a disused airfield where we can put these various acceleration claims to the test? Now that would be an ideal location for a meet. (Derek)

Well have a look at www.APIRA.org.uk

You can all go there and camp for a weekend and put your cars against the clock to validate any claims/disputes etc. or just have fun. Good atmosphere and folk although they're sometimes a bit tetchy about FWD, but think that an XM wouldn't be lumped in with the much disliked "baseball cap back to front and baked bean tin exhaust trim" brigade.

A friend of mine runs a road legal, caravan towing Bedford CF there which runs the standing 1/4 mile in the 11 second bracket. Another has a 400E Thames that's less than half a second slower !!
Have pics, but can't seem to put them here.

Hi Gents

Regarding the petrol v diesel distraction that arose earlyer in the post.......what about a 1.9 bx gti v a 1.9n/a diesel bx anyone got these two???? obviously the gti would wipe the floor with the derv biggrin.gif biggrin.gif

Thats an invalid comparison, as the DERV has NO Turbo!!

Stick a turbo on and it would have a harder job..

When I had my BX 17td, a fella in a C reg Cavalier SRi 130, tried to pass me once, he got parralell but couldn't pass! I had a big smile!!

This is my point exactly, it IS a perfect comparison both cars are 1969cc 4 cyl normally aspirated engines, the only difference is the fuel, and diesel would be left behind in a drag race or in gear acceleration test because it is rubbish for getting any power out of, the whole point of derv is economy, the downside is a low comparable top end power output, noisy idle, a narrow power band and complicated/expensive injection systems. Diesels are given turbo's because without them you may as well walk, (well a slight exaggeration but you get the point) petrol's are rarely given turbos because you can always get enough power out of a compact 4cyl engine to do the job.

Dean, I think that you need to live with a 2.5TD for a while, your attitude would chnge, I'm sure.

Hi Rosspa

I assure you it would not, i have owned 2.7 and 3l v6s 2.3t and 2.5t 4cylinder petrols and my dad has a 2.5td Mazda which i drive regularly and i can assure you both, the 2.5td wouldn't have a cats chance in hell of getting anywhere near any of them with top speed or acceleration.
Don't get me wrong, a 2.5td is ok to drive, a bit of a pain when you want to get on due to its low red line, but as an every day car it pulls ok with excellent economy. But the 2.3turbo petrol which has 200cc less capacity remember, will piss all over it, i had that Saab up to an indicated 145+ and still pulling, that's off the speedo and you wont do that in a 2.5td. Diesel exists for economy, simple as that.

PS you must understand i would quite happily consider a derv for day to day use, especially if i was doing big milage, i wouldn't want anyone to think i am slagging off their derv's. my argument here is that lb for lb derv produces less power than petrol and my preference will always be petrol.

Dean, there's only on way to settle this (as Harry Hill would say) - FIGHT!! No, I'm joking of course, but I to have a pretty wide experience of different cars, and, I used to be much like Clarkson in as much as I thought Diesels dirty, smelly, slow, noisy things. What changed me was my first drive in a BX I.9 in 1993, on offer for £50 with a failing clutch. I bought it and found out that the pedel box was cracked, so an easy fix. I needed an economical car as I was commuting 70 miles a day. Although certainly not fast, I had the car 4 years and did 85000 miles in it at around 45-50 mpg with no problems. Actually sold it for £350 still going strong. My current 2.5TD was bought 5 years ago for £1500 and can hold its own with all but the most exotic cars negotiating roundabouts and accelerating away. You just can not use practically in todays traffic much more power than the 130bhp and massive torque provided by the 2.5. I know, I have also used my brothers car, a Jaguar supercharged XJV8s. OK you get a great thrill using that cars 400bhp, but you really pay for it in fuel and tyres! The Citroens suspension is the best, handling is pretty good for such a large car, at 85mph, I'm still getting around 37mpg and it'll run happily on cooking oil! The mileage is comming up to 200,000 and its been fantastically reliable. I'm sorry, but no petrol car I have ever owned has given me so much comfort and pleasure for so little cost at such reliability.

The CX25 DTR turbo did 0 - 60 in 10.7 seconds and 120 mph in 1987! Twenty years ago? And at 3600 rpm.

Hi Peter

And the NON turbocharged 2996cc petrol 5 series? i will tell you, 0-60mph in 6.3sec and on to a LIMITED 155mph that's quicker than the twin turbo charged diesel, only by .1 of a second, but the petrol can do it without the turbo's biggrin.gif .
I have never driven a cx dtr but i had a bx dtr and i will agree totally with Rosspa about economy of the derv, that's what they are for, but you will never.....ever, in a million years get a diesel to keep up with the same size petrol. you may as well give up now gents tongue.gif Oh and the 2.5 turbo (petrol) Cx got to 60 in just 8.6 seconds making the Dtr's 10.7 look a little slow.

Ps im glad you didnt want to have a harry hill style fight rosspa, i would have had a fair bit of trouble tracking down a rubber suit in the style of an engine to wear biggrin.gif biggrin.gif
