Sunroof Xm To Xm, swapping smashed glass sunroof

My 1993 SED sunroof took a direct hit from a chimney pot.
Can I swap the one from my soon to be scrapped 1991 into it?
How big a job is it? Haynes say's leave it to the dealers.

Has anyone done this Haynes six spannerer?

I've changed the complete sunroof mechanism on several occasions now. And it's reasonably easy.

The glass itself is the same as the BX and I know they can be changed in the BX in less than an hour. So I'd expect yours to be the same.

I have a sunroof related question - how easy is it to remove the headlining/sunroof drainage tray? My rear left sunroof drainage pipe doesn't seem to be doing its job properly, leaving me with wet carpet. It's not blocked, so I supect it has come off the drainage tray.

Any other suggestions as to what may be causing this are welcome.

Hi Robert

The rear drain tubes connect to pipes that project from the back corners of the sun roof tray. If you remove the plastic trim covers and side lights/handles the rear of the headlining should ease off its valcro fixings for you to get at these pipe connections without removing the sunroof.

I'll give that a try incase the drain pipe has come loose or has a fracture.

Has anyone removed the headlining from their Xm, as my Xm thinks that it is a Cx and the headlining is sagging at the back, and I would like to stick the material back onto the board affair that it is should be stuck too.

yep.

from memory you need to remove all the plastic trim that comes up to the headlining and then the electrical fittings and sun visors. Slide sunroof back and there's a couple screws that go in from the outside to the front edge of the hole in the headlining, undo these and it'll drop. remove out the rear hatch.

Hi Robert

They are separate items. The headlining is thin lightweight pressed fibreboard held up by the trim, light fittings, sunroof screws and valcro strips. Easy for one person to remove. The sunroof is very heavy and held up to the chassis with bolts and clips. For one person to take it down you need to tie a rope or straps through between the doors and over the roof. This stops it either dropping onto you or damaging itself by breaking away from the last bolt under its own weight.

Nah that's the wimpy way to do it

Once the headlining is out of the way slacken the mountings, unhook the drain hoses and remove the 4 corner bolts. Then support with your shoulder and undo the 2 centre bolts - one each side, while pushing the casette up against the roof.

Lower carefully and pass it out through the boot. Refit as a reversal.

Granted it's awkward, but hey, at least the car is on the ground
Sunroof I stripped out at a breakers was 2 rows up on scaffolding and no chance of openning the boot unless you worked out how to walk on air. Fun getting the unit turned and out the side door and then down the ladder too!

If you are going to drop yours out, then remove the covers on the cable runners and clean/grease well and apply sealant where appropriate to keep thing moving smoothly and water ingress into the cabin etc.

on. I did the job over the weekend. The sunroof job is nothing to be scared of, the Haynes manual states it is best left to dealers, but I found it to be one of the easiest jobs I have ever done on the XM, it just takes time and being methodical about it (record what screws go where). I did it single handed, but alas didn't see the top tip about a rope over the roof to lower the unit until this morning. My untutored solution was a lump of wood supporting verticaly from the front edge of the back seat.
I was also surprised at how all the interior trim went back into place as if it had never been removed.
3 hours to take both out of respective cars and refit one into the car I am keeping.

Haynes would tell you to goto the dealer to change a bulb if they had too!!!

A complete book of jokes... What annoys me more with the wiring diagrams, it would have helped to tell you WHERE particular items are located..

I have a problem with courtesy lights in the Black Onyx, they dont go out even with locking the door, I suspect the delay control unit, but .. where is it!!

Its in the electrical diagrams but they cant even tell you were they are.. If they've stripped a car, why not make an extra note..

Anyway, moan over..

Interesting sunroof advice, the roofs on my cars all play up (DONT even move on the black onyx) so this is an interesting thread..
