Hi all

my car has a Clarion stereo that takes a CD changer. What style of audio-in adaptors will I find at the rear of the stereo unit? As the ones below?

cheers

Axel '87 1.1 - real '70s Citroen handling (nope, it's not hydraulic!)

Is your XM as soft as it should be ??

...Well, again: is it ???

Mine is not as good...but quite near!

I would have thought the audio would always be those. If not then you could find adaptors for them.

The important bit is the control connector. This will vary between makes/models. It is the one that tells the CD changer what to do, and most radios will not listen to the CD audio inputs unless they are getting the correct signals back from the CD changer.

If it's factory fit then it'll be a multipin connector rather than RCA plugs/sockets.

Hi all, thanks for info.

I am actually thinking of an input for my mp3 player.

So no RCA plugs at the rear of my stereo?

Unless it's an aftermarket 'universal' head unit probably not. All factory fit CD changers I've dealt with use a multicore cable with bespoke plugs and sockets. That's not to say you can't use the input but you'd have to find the correct pins.

If I was doing it I'd try to find a suitable multicore cable from a scrap car and chop the plug off with about a metre of wire still attached then look for the screened pair which will carry the audio signal. You could then join onto this 'header'.

Thanks all!

probably won't be that simple as the head unit will report no CD changer unit when you switch to it and then switch back to radio...

Is it the braille button Clarion unit? That has a 13-pin (I think) cable to link the changer unit. You'd have to rig some electronics to spoof the head unit it you really want to get an MP3/ipod to work with it - I remember reading something some while back that someone had put something together but can't recall where now.

regards
Dave

See this guys photostream -

I would think most car audio shops will just want to sell you a new head unit.

Steve.

Hi Steve

thanks, I knew this guy's doings from other posts here, however I haven't found anybody that could do the same for me, so have to resort to other solutions. As much as I hate it, perhaps the easiest is the classical tape/line-in thingy...

cheers

Thanks Steve, this was my prefered solution till I read in some forum that they don't actually perform quite well. So this comparative test will be useful!

cheers

I tried the cheapo FM transmitter I got for xmas 2006 over xmas 2007 (sadly Clarion radio in my at that time only XM had just bust late 2006). I must say I was distinctly not impressed with the result, the quality from the tape was MUCH better (in my S2 XM with Phillips radio cassette). I was triyng to use my minidisc player, and will need to use it again when the wing mirror is back on my S1 car as the replacement Clarion radio cassette has developed tape speed issues, however I will be using the old style tape adapter with headphone cable coming out of it.
