Hello,

I bought me used XM and everything works quite OK (minor issue, nothing really big, car is in really good shape for it's age).

I found out that i have cruise control. But it simply don't work. I enable it with button near shifter (i don't know how to call section where automatic transmission control in English sad.gif ) and then i tried put it control under steering wheel up and even push it to driver site and then move my foot from throttle, but it simply don't work. Any tips what is usually cause of cruise control failure?

Thanks for your replies. smile.gif

Hi Loli,

This depends on which XM you have. The 2.5TD has electronic throttle control (fly by wire) and has a simple electronic cruise control that seems to rely on the engine computer to operate. If that's your car then I can't help.

All the other models have a mechanical system. Basically there is a vacuum pump driven by an electric motor, which supplies a vacuum to an actuator which is in turn connected to the throttle mechanism. Faults in the mechanical side are usually caused by either a perished vacuum hose or some derangement in the throttle connection.

The vacuum pump is switched on and off as required by the control system which is electrical. The main bits are the on/off switch (button on instrument panel with outline of an arrow on it), selector lever on steering column, a brake switch (the stop light switch which does two jobs) under the brake pedal, either a clutch switch for manual gearboxes or a different switch for autos, a relay on the front panel, the cruise control controller (on the front of the box housing all the other computers), the wiring connecting it all and of course the two fuses that feed it.

For the best information on how to check this rats nest, I suggest you go to "XM issues" in this forum and scroll down to the item "Cruise control gone again" dated 16 December 2006 with last post on 18 October 2007. If you have the vacuum type I'm pretty sure you'll find the answer there.

Derek

Do tell us a little more about your car! Year, model (diesel/gasoline/displacement, etc), ORGA number, color, you know. And, oh, yes, Welcome to the Club biggrin.gif

It is 1992, 2.0 injection gasoline model with automatic transmission, not much power things: power steering, brakes smile.gif, front windows (but goes up and down really slow - probably just need it's motors cleaning), power roof windows. Interior in really good shape and only minor exterior defects - little scratches and one bigger (about 1.5cm circle) on hood sad.gif. Also it have plush seats with power angle settings, two zone manual AC (working smile.gif ) and radio control on steering wheel, but i don't use original radio so it is not working. Engine looks nice and hydraulics too. Overall car looks it had nice care about it and runs really nice. Color is dark green and i will post foto soon smile.gif It have 214000km on odometer and next oil change is after 1000km. Have new green balls, new brake clips, etc.

What is orga number?

I really like the car and way how it roll smile.gif

My biggest issue now is that it have broken front window so i currently seeking some cheap replacement solution. smile.gif

BTW Transmission is not 100% smooth, maybe it is normal in European cars with automatic i never had any. It is only a little impulse, like very fast and smooth shift up/down with manual. Transmission had oil change every 10 000 km!

Other minor problem is with front window wiper, that it don't go up to corner (there was really strong wind and i run quite fast on highway yesterday and it even fall on mirror. smile.gif ), but i hope this will be probably 10 seconds fix.

I'll leave someone else to explain ORGA numbers to you as you obviously can't see my posts.

The ORGA number or RP number as it is also called, is a production code which is painted on the left hand side A pillar and is visible when the door is opened. With this number the accurate date op production can be traced.
