When the XM is jacked up by say at the tyre depot I usually set the suspension to the highest postion first which prevents the car grounding when the jack is lowered.
Should this be done at the MOT station?. when the car is jacked up on the ramp to enable the suspension etc to be checked by the tester?. -------------------- from

The tester I've taken all mine to over the last decade always has the car on normal running
height where he then lifts the car up on the jack/lift to check the front suspension with the engine running continuously. In effect this has the effect of depressurising the system and it needs to pressure back up upon being planted back down on the floor as it lifts back up. It's easier to detect any play with no pressure in the system than when it's on max and I can't argue with that - after all I don't want any wear that will burn the tyres out etc. Andrew |

Dont want to sound like a stick in the mud, but the idea of an MOT is to check your car is Fit to be on the road.. I think ball joint are very important, especially for tyre wear.. When you put the suspension up on high, it tightens all the joints, this then prevents the mot tester finding any worn joints... then when you let the suspension back down, if theres any wear its not been found and then your driving around with any worn parts wearing your tyres out prematurly, or even risking a breaking ball joint!!
Personally, I ALWAYS go round the car and check front ball joints in the same way, useing a trolly jack to jack the car up.. Its worth the half hour to save a MOT failure or any worn part failure.. Rgds citroenxm -------------------- 1993 K Reg 3.0 V6 12 Valve Auto (Green) LPG S1.5 SORNd

Don't think you are!! That's exact;y the point of depressurising the system - it's the same for the rear arm bearings etc as any slack has been braced by the pressure in the system and it isn't as easy to identify any problems. A tester doing the car on high doesn't understand Citroens!! Andrew |
