Very glad to have found you all - someone gave me the address 6 months ago and then I lost it! Almost impossible to find if one doesnt use the word "Club"!
I've had XMs for 7 years with a short break for a Mercedes 320 CDi estate - but I went hurriedly off and bought another XM instead. My 2.5 Exlusive estate isn't as fast as the Merc but it has a better ride and is more comfy (as if you need telling!). And its ten times more fun. Except when things go wrong. Have spent a fortune on it - as one has to - but does anyone know how to change the starter motor? I've got fed up with paying a garage to do this every 18 months. All replies gratefully received! With best wishes to all XM owners! -------------------- 2.5 Exclusive Estate 1994 metallic greenie colour

Welcome to the best place for all the information and help you need!
I've not much experiance with the 2.5td lump, but I'm certain its on the front of the engine/gearbox, under all the gubbings etc... There are many 2.5 td drivers that I'm sure will point you in the correct direction and tell you how to do it!! Hi,
Are you saying that the starter motor fails every 18 months or am I getting the wrong end of the stick? If it is, is it because your XM is hard to start? The starter is under the intercooler and bracket so I would think that you need to remove or set aside that first. Steve. -------------------- XM 2.1 SED - RP5876

I may be touching wood when I say that in all the 100's of thousand miles I have done with at least 4 cars with 2.5TD engines, I have never had to replace a starter motor, nor have I heard of anyone else having to do so.
I suggest you look elsewhere before having to do it again. The starter on a (properly maintained) 2.5Td *never* takes more than one or two quick flicks to start. -------------------- Xantia 2 litre HDi Saloon X reg 1999

Hi Hydractive,
Welcome to club-XM. I hope you find it useful and friendly. Out of curiosity, when was the last time you searched for club-xm without using the word club? If I try searching Google for "Citroen XM" today, Club-XM comes top of the bill just below the sponsored ad's. Having said that, I know a year or two back you'd search on Citroen XM and I gave up at page 40 and still never found Club-XM. Thankfully now we're top billing. It's testimony to all the members who regularly contribute and share their woes which makes club-xm as successful as it is. To remove the 2.5's starter motor you need to at least remove the intercooler and the associated mounting bracket. It would probably make the job easier but not absolutely necessary if you took the radiators out. You run the slight risk of putting a spanner or ratchet handle through the rad when slackening the bolts on the starter. In all its probably only a 2-hr job although I've never had to touch a 2.5TD starter. As Techman says, its very unusual for it to give any trouble. If I pick you up correctly you seem to suggest the starter needs changed every 18 months? In which case, what's the failure mode? Is it electrical? Bearings? Sticky Bendix? Is it the starter pinion which wears on the ring gear? Maybe a consistent failure mode would point to an alternative source of your woes. Just a thought. If you google the web you get clubXM top of list
If you google uk pages only you don't get club XM at all, well not for several pages I suppose that's because it's .com and not .co.uk........I think -------------------- 94M 2.0 Turbo Exclusive auto hatch, Green, RP 6552

From stone cold my starter motor disengages before it turns the engine enough to start it. When the starter motor is warm it will stay engaged long enough to start the engine. I had this about 18 months ago and eplaced the starter. I was wondering if anyone has any ideas on this - asomeone told me the starter motor gets too hot through a design fault and needs frequent replacement. The engine is an easy starter when the starter motor works.
As far a finding Club XM goes I made frequent searches on Google with no luck but eventually find it through links from other sites. Lucky! Best to all XMers. -------------------- 2.5 Exclusive Estate 1994 metallic greenie colour

Hi.
I can't say I've had any faults with any of my PSA diesels. Heat wise I'd be very surprised because the exhaust is on the other side of the engine block. Maybe the V6 is more prone to such problems but I couldn't say because I've never had one. Both my 2.1 and 2.5 have started very promptly, how much turning over does yours need? Where about are you, if you don't mind me asking? Steve. -------------------- XM 2.1 SED - RP5876

Hi there. Thank you for your reply. It doesnt need much turning over but the starter disengages almost immediately.

Hi.
Yes V6's do suffer starter problems a lot due to the front manifold needing to go around the bottom of the engine to the rear, the unit was never originally designed to go in Transverse, it has ALWAYS been in line from design in the 70's. The XM and 605 (and Laguna at that matter!) were the first generation to get it transverse.. I heard of this problem a good few years ago on a BX 16v.. replacement of the starter cured the problem! Strange for this on your DERV, as luckily the XUD engines have their exhausts on the rear out the way.. must be a case of unlucky.. but XUD starters seem to be pretty robust items.. Sounds like the Solinoid spring could have broken.. The presumption through this string is that you have a 2.5 TD. Your signature does not give your car maodel so it is possible that you have a V6 or other petrol model, in which case it would modify the answers considerably perhaps?
