I bought my Montego when I lost the cambelt on my BX. I took a day off work (I had to commute to Portsmouth), and literally had one day, and £150, to get a car. I ended up with a Montego estate. It was horrible to drive, and the radiator and heater fans didn't work (I later found out), but it was HUGE, and very reliable. It never broke down once in the going on 2 years I had it, and even went through an MOT for very minimal money despite looking a total shed. Eventually, a kindly old man wrote it off for me while it was parked. I thanked him effusively.

Hi Wirdy,

My damaged car was a 2 litre Victor estate. The hire company told me the Marina was the only comparable car so I assumed it was also a 2 litre.

I promise you I didn't have it long enough to check it out and the whole feel of the car was so poor I didn't use any power. My trip to work was Reading to Middle Wallop, 30 miles including the cross country bit from Newbury to Andover. And it was 1972.
