Hi Charlie

The button on the dash with the car/arrow is the power supply on/off switch for the cruise control. When pressed in it latches and the warning lamp on the switch should light up. Press again if you wish to switch of Cruise. With the system live Cruise is actioned with the lever under the Lights/Indicator Stalk. Drive at the desired speed and flick the lever either up or down. The speed is now memorised and regulated. You can use the accelerator to go faster to overtake and when you take your foot off the car will settle back to the set Cruise speed. Touching the brake pedal or the clutch pedal will switch off cruise but not erase the memorised speed. Flicking the cruise stalk towards you will also disengage cruise. Flicking it away from you will re-engage cruise at the previously selected speed. Holding the stalk up will increase the cruise memorised speed. Release the stalk when the chosen speed is reached. Holding the stalk down will reduce the cruise memorised speed. The minimum regulated cruise speed is 25mph.
You need a copy of the XM handbook and I suspect that it should be version XM-GB-5005 if yours is a 95 model year car. The version number is printed on the bottom of the outside back cover. That is the only year that had the itallic White XM symbol was used on the front cover of the owners manual. I can find a spare if you cannot source elsewhere. Alarm and Immobiliser instructions are different for other model years.

Regards

The alarm is enabled by pressing the second (deadlock) remote button, immediately after the first lock button. When active, it monitors all doors, bonnet, boot, and ignition status, as well as scanning the interior for disturbances (i.e breaking glass) via the volumetric sensors in the vents, unless you've cancelled these sensors manually with the dash button before arming the system.

As far as I know, the immobiliser is independant of the alarm, but arming the alarm should set the immobiliser. Disarming will not de-immobilise though. On later models, the alarm passively activates after a certain period of time if the car is left idle.

One other trick I discovered about cruise. If you have it set to, say, 70 mph and you come to a 50 mph limit, brake down to the new speed (this disengages cruise) and when at the desired speed flick the lever up to re-engage and then flick it down. This sets the cruise to the new speed.

Hi Charlie

You seem to be an optimist. If your XM runs true to form when you have done the timing belt you will be trying to work out why the Cruise Control does not work.

Best of Luck

Derek,

If you have cruise on then slow down, you dont need to flick it up to re-engage at the new speed, you can simply flick it DOWN to set the new slower speed...

If the system works properly, and you flick the stalk up after slowing down from your last speed, the car should accelerate back up to the last spped you were at when you cancelled it... if however you flick it down it will stay at the current showing speed...
