Folks,

I've done a search, but can't recall how to remove the scuttle plate, chiefly which way to prise and push at the plate's edges.

Can anyone help, please? I seem to recall damaging one side once before.

The wipers linkage seems to have had some kind of trauma.

Thanks in anticipation.

Rob

Hi Rob

The two side trims are held on by plastic catches moulded to the underside. The top ones are reasonable substantial but the bottom two catches are thin, flimsey and easily broken off. Not the best time of year to be trying to remove them as the cold makes the plastic more brittle. Push down on the trim and pull/lever the bottom edge outward when you think the clips are free. Some turn out to be already broken then having been stuck back with epoxy putty. Scuttle is then held with 2 screws each side, one at the centre and then 4 spigots along the front edge. The wiper drive frame is a real s*d to get out unless you take the motor off first. If you do take the frame out it is worth marking the wiper arm positions as reassembling them wrong can burn out the motor if the blades lock up. Guess how I know that. In your case you may just need to swap the motors over which should be fairly easy.

Regards

I think that if you remove the arms (or lock them off the screen) you can operate the replaced wiper motor normally until it reaches the park position, then fit the arms in the correct position by removing them from their driving shafts and refitting.

Thanks, all!

It’s simply (?!) the nut having fallen off the motor spindle.

Is the coarse spindle thread a standard one? The nut has left the scuttle area, or is hiding very well. I’m assuming that it’s not a self-locking one.

The splines on the linkage are slightly damaged, but I suspect that a bit of careful dressing with a junior hacksaw blade, plus reassembly with a dab of metallised epoxy glue may result in a fix. Has anyone done this?

And I seem to recall that the brake valve needs some kind of lubrication. Can anyone advise on this? Anything else recommended, apart from leaf-clearing, whilst I'm under here?

Thanks in anticipation.

Rob

Hi Rod

13mm nut, the original has a tapered top surface to make it a little thinner than usual but a standard one will do. I have had these nuts come loose on a couple of the XM's over the years but have never bothered try to clean up the splines just wound the nut back down tight. This was because it has happened and got sorted whilst I was out and about rather than wait to get home.

Hi rq

You have my sympathy - my wiper motor nut fell off last winter on my way home from work and I had to fix it on the drive, in the dark by the faint light of a street lamp!! At least the rain had stopped.
Luckily the job went well and I got the positioning right first time.

While you are in the scuttle area check that the relay lever which acts on the button on the end of the brake valve is moving freely. Its worthwhile putting a good dollop of grease on the lever pivot area to keep it mobile. Also check that there is a clearance between the relay lever and the brake valve when the brake pedal is at rest. No clearance here can lead to the well known front brake binding problem.
