Anyone know where I can find the interior lighting timer on a series 1.5?
Is it on the interior fusebox and if so which one? I am attaching a photo of the fusebox any help to identify what relay does what would be appreciated |

On the Mk2 its under the dash on the drivers side, above and to the right of the steering column, if I remember correctly. Its a rectangular box about 3" X 2" X 1"
I would suspect that the Mk1 is the same. Peter.N. -------------------- Used to have:

That's a handy location, I've been considering adding in one of the little ignition lock lights to my S1 like the S2s have. If the box was in behind there it would make it a doddle..

Amazing, I've just logged on to ask about the timer myself and would you believe it there's a thread already on the go. If the relay is blue then bodgery has been wrought on the loom in my car(s1).
I removed the glovebox the other day to let a bit of light under the dash whilst changing the heater fan. Laying loose on top of the loom is a black 5 pin relay, the cabling to which has been cut and reconnected so that some of the wires going to it are obviously going to different pins. 2 green wires coming out of the loom don't connect to the relay base and are flapping about in the breeze. When the relay is pulled from the base the interior lights go out, they don't work as they should anyway, just responding to the door switches even then only the lamps above the windscreen. The rear lamps don't work at all. I'll try and post a picture of the wiring and relay if I can get my cheap and nasty digital camera to work. I think the relay in mine is black, but then mine is a Mk2.

Hi Peter
This looks like a bog standard Cartier relay that you would expect to find in the screen heater circuit or similar, wouldn't a timer relay be a double height jobbie?, this one is about 20mm ish high. Bob -------------------- 1993 XM 2.1 td estate, it's green.

Thanks everyone,
had the steering lock out recently and came across that "Black box" and wondered what it did, now I can have another look at it to see if it has anything to do with my interior light refusing to switch off! BTW I have checked all the door switches etc and all seem fine. |

Hi Bob
Not the right one. The timer/fader/switch is in quite a large box, I looked at an old one today and its about 4" x2" x1" and contains a PCB with several ICs and transistors in addition to a relay. Easiest way to check is pull it out and the light should go out. Peter.N. -------------------- Used to have:

Hi Peter
Thanks for that, can you recall whereabouts it's located? I'm a bit puzzled now as to why the lights don't work when I pull this small relay from the holder. Bob -------------------- 1993 XM 2.1 td estate, it's green.

Evening all
Having had another nose around this evening and checked the continuity of the wiring between the light switch on the dash and the bodged up relay I'm pretty sure that on my car at least that there should be a timer relay in this location. The parts list that I've downloaded shows a blue seven pin relay as the timer unit, is this the one that Norman has metioned? Bob -------------------- 1993 XM 2.1 td estate, it's green.

Hi Bob
I have one in front of me and its bigger than I thought. Its black, 12cm long x 8cm wide x 3cm thick (I don't know what this means but dont have a rule that measures in inches) It has 2 x 13 pin sockets and has the number : G5 9613347380 000 on it. I think it is fixed down, slides on a bracket, and the leads plug in. Peter.N. -------------------- Used to have:

Hi Peter
Looking at the parts list which covers the series1 cars I'm sure the timer relay is the blue 7 pin one shown. Haven't found a list for series2 cars but I imagine you've got the later controller from your discription. I've traced some of the cables from the dashboard switch and they do wind up at the relay, can't imagine why it's been bodged up so that only a third of the system works. Hi Rob
If my memory serves me correctly the car I had the problem with was a 'K' reg which would have been a Mk1. The unit failed as a result of the garage which fitted a new heater matrix, trapping a wire behind the steering column clamp which when they tightened it up, shorted it to earth and burnt something out in the unit. This was on one of the very few occaisions that I entrusted a job to a garage, and was reminded why I don't! The Haynes manual shows it as 'Interior lighting timer unit' ref 105 on the circuit. It has inputs from the door switches, the ignition switch and central locking. According to the diagram there are only seven connections. I will have a look at the Citroen circuit, if I can find it, I have just changed my computer! Peter.N. -------------------- Used to have:

Hi Peter
You are correct, I've got the timer in front of me now, blue, 7 pin connector block, fixed to metal plate on the driver's side. Spent a couple of hours yesterday under the dash of a scrapped mk1 estate at Medway Citroen removing it and various other bits. The interior lighting circuit on my car has been well and truly mucked about with, the loom has been chopped around under the glove box to fit this other relay. The wiring that's supposed to run under the dash to the driver's side doesn't seem to be there but I haven't taken the access panel off yet so I don't know what I'm going to find. The Haynes diagram is starting to make sense now (never thought I'd say that) so hopfully I'll be able to reinstate the wiring correctly. Bob -------------------- 1993 XM 2.1 td estate, it's green.
