Got a working Clarion head unit in the S1 Presteige (thanks Dean, cheque on the way).

Works fine without the steering wheel controls plugged in (round DIN plug).

With the the wheel controls plugged in all front panel controls on the head unit not working except for power. Well, I didn't try ALL the buttons but vol and a few others not working. The wheel controls also dont work.

Old head unit had the same or similar problem (as well as left channel not working and tape not working). I never tried it with the wheel controls unplugged.

Any ideas?

Its great to have sounds back in that car :-) smile.gif Scrapper window winder on way too!

Sadly I have intermittent problems with my steering wheel controls (ser 1.5 prestige), I think it is just the naff switches wearing out over time. I don't think there is a cure except to find one with 'less worn' switches. Luckily (for me) the switches on the head unit are OK.

If one of the wheel switches is permanently on then it could give this I should think.

Usually the systems work on the basis of different switches connect pairs of wires on the connector with a different resistance.

One the Mk 2 there are 2 pairs of wires for the steering controls. One pair is the left side switches and the other pair is the right side switches. Different switches on the left side connect the 2 left side wires with a different resistance in order to identify the individual switch. I would expect the Mk1 to be a variation on the same design as most systems use the same general idea AFAIK.

I think the Mk1 has fewer switches so it may only use one pair of wires for all buttons.

The wiring diagram for it all on the Mk2 is on Noz's CD. Not sure about the Mk1.

As plugging the remote stops the radio from working, it sound as though either you have a compatibility problem or a fault on you steering wheel buttons. It could be that one is making permenant contact thus locking the others out. The only solution I can think of is to try it in another car.

It was tested before shipping, dean, did you try the wheel controls?

Switch fault in the wheel is best candidate so far. especially as I had the same problem with the old unit.

thanks for all the input

Hi DrTim

I drove the car that this stereo was removed from, and all worked as it should including steering controls, that was in July i think, before i sent it i only checked the cassette and radio worked, that it powered up and that it would accept the code, The stereo was new in 03 so i dont think it is at fault.
See how you get on with it, if it proves to be the steering wheel controls, i have two or three spare sets in the garage so should be able to sort you out.
Try pulling the centre section of the steering wheel off and unplugging the controls and check the switches first. let us now how you get on

Regards Dean
