Has anyone a opinion about the two XM for sale on Ebay at the moment, a 2.1 hatch with a starting bid of £2400 and a 2.5 estate starting bid £3300. Are we really this rich.

I think that the price of the 2.5 estate is because the dot matrix display is in full working order. rolleyes.gif

It does seem a bit pointless (to me anyway) listing these "old" cars with such high starting prices, especially when you consider the listing fees.

However, you only need to find the one person who wants it that badly. rolleyes.gif

I think the answer is yes - especially with late model, high spec or low mileage (diesel) examples in good condition. Although they come up from time to time on Auto Trader at low prices they're usually snapped up quickly. A recent example was a nice black 2.5TD Exclusive with 150k miles for £1,150 which sold straight away - presumably because it was priced in line with the low mileage petrol models listed around that time.

Given the enthusiastic following the 2.5TD estate has I'd have thought a low mileage late one in reasonable condition with alloys, aircon, twin airbags etc represents an attractive proposition as a long term car for someone. Personally - I think it's a lot of (rare) car for £3k - even if it does need a few bits & pieces done to it.

Although it's nice to be able to pick up an absolute bargain once in a while because the seller doesn't know the value of the car he's selling I really don't think those prices give a true indication of the XM's worth. They normally sell to the first person to view them (some don't even view before agreeing to buy), within hours of being advertised with a further 20-30+ potential buyers calling up only to be told the car's already sold.

I don't think he's having a laugh. (It's not me by the way - but I'd be very surprised if the seller isn't someone here.) Good luck to him - they both look like nice cars.

I think the attitude to XM prices has evolved from the fact that there were so many cheap ones about a few years ago. My personal philosophy was that if something serious went wrong, throw it away and buy another. My present two cars cost me £800.00 three and a half years ago (green one) and £600.00 this year for the red one (with a new engine) I have had to do work on both of them, but now there is no option as you can't just go out and buy another, and there is no equivelent newer car to replace them with.

I must admit that if I saw a good late 2.1 manual estate, I would be prepared to pay a lot more for it than previously, but they are like the proverbial hens teeth, I have only seen one late, 'S' reg I think, for sale in the last three or four years.

The last batch of manuals they sold were registered in Jan 96, 61 in total and I have had three of them and there are still some about. I am looking for a silver or red one that's done about 50K. smile.gif smile.gif

Hi all.

Love the motors, but I think over £3k is a nonsense price. If he gets a bid on that, mine will be up next day for £3299 !. It's a year older, but lower miles (just!) and has the benefit of proper steel wheels that you can get balanced ! To

MIke.

ive been looking at a few for a little while now and im amazed at the price range that they come in

i suppose that if youre more upbeat about what you sell and put a reassuringly expensive price tag on it you could sell it for mega money

and i think hes got his price from what a reputable cit garage would ask but whether he'll get that in a private sale is another ask

but its difficult to compare like with like, cause as we all know, two cars are never usually the same

at the other end of the market how about this

My brother in law is looking for a 2.1 estate. But I've advised him on the price along the lines of Peter's theory. If you spend 2 or 3K on one and anything major fails, mad.gif you are committed to having it repaired.

Whereas like mine, cost me £700 to put on the road 3 years ago. I could afford to throw it away in the event of a major failure. It'd still break my heart mind. biggrin.gif

I think he's a bit barmy. These cars are worth £1000 at the most.

The estate also has faults he has listed which are pretty usual on XM's so in no way is it top drawer stuff.

I suggested that his start price of £3300 was meant to be £330 and was it an error. He didn't like that.

I don't like the diesels but a late car would have been nice for spares. At £330 !!

Further to this, and a bit off topic, I have sold a 3800 mile Rover 820 1988 F reg, one owner and then me, for £400. I know its not an XM and not that special. However, it was like new and drove as new. And thats what it was worth. And thats what I advertised it for and let it go for.

I also have a perfect 1992 827 Coupe with 19000 miles on it - mine since it was a year old. I'd value that around £1200.

His XM valuations are just so far out, man!

Had a look at that one, its a zero feedback seller aswell.

Thinking about having a bid on that one, probably will, but like said above, the description doesn't do it any favors at all.

No pictures doesn't help the listing either!

David.

Hi Brad.

I'd have to say the 2.5 estates, in good order are a little more than a grands worth (but not near his price) to a buyer who is actively looking. There is no comparable vehicle on the market now and if you use them as workhorses still, as I do, I'd say seriously decent ones might be anywhere up to £2k. Certainly in the motor trade now they would be virtually worthless, given their undeserved reoutation.

Mike.
