Hi Bob

Well done, mine's a black one but sounds like the same thing. Yes, occaisionally the Haynes manual does help, it helped me find my non working fuel guage problem by identifying the plug and pin that the sender was connected to, but it doesn't always work, I used the same circuit to locate the input from the speedo sensor and it turned out to be for the foglight warning lamp!

Hi Peter

Had a quick look under the driver's side dash today, the connector block for the relay is not the same as the one I retreived from the mk1 last weekend. My one takes a standard square relay (which is absent by the way), haven't had time to see if the wiring going to it has the same number/colours of cables. The rest of the dash will be coming off this weekend so I can try and find where the wiring has been chopped about.

That's a shame. They obviously must have changed them like so many other things. I thought mine was from a Mk1 but I must have been mistaken.

Evening all

Update on wiring problem after a few hours mucking around today. Removed the rest of the dash this morning and discovered that I have got the same timer relay as the one pulled from the scrapper last weekend after all, just couldn't see it until all of the trim panels were off. Don't know what the other 5 pin socket is for yet. Also received a copy of the Russek manual yesterday, at last, wiring diagrams that make some sense. I now see that the bodged wiring under the glove box is for a relay marked 837 in the diagram, someone has added a cable to the socket that runs down past the sill towards the rear and swapped some of the other cables so that they run to different pins. I've reinstated everything to match the diagram and now without a relay in position all the switchable interior lights work but using the relay that was fitted now means nothing works at all. If the dash switch is pushed the relay buzzes without any lights coming on, I quess it could just be the wrong relay anyway and perhaps the timer may be duff, ran out of light so it'll be later in the week before I can have another go. The Russek book is great isn't it? everything Haynes used to be twenty years ago.
