Been asked if I know anyone who would buy the following:-
1995 3 litre auto, hatchback, Black/black leather, electric armrest, 12 months mot. 90k miles no towbar, aircon, one window not working. My aversion to auto's is well documented so its not for me. Any interest let me know along with the price you want to offer. DJGLW P.S. Car is in Glasgow. -------------------- Rehab Is for Quitters!

Any history? Knowledgeable owner? has the gearbox oil ever been changed?
Exhaust condition? tyres condition? VSX / Exclusive? Spheres done recently? bodywork condition? I think that should cover most questions from this forum. I think we all know that the auto boxes mated to the hot running 3.0 engine is not the best combination for longevity and a gearbox failure almost certainly means another ebay 'breaking for spares' car. -------------------- '99 'V' XM 2.0 CT VSX Auto Estate RP 8360 Green.

My 12v V6 is on its original box at 140k and its smooth as silk. Perhaps longevity is down to the fact its had oil changes every time the engine oil's been changed?

I think you've hit the nail on the head there Ian. I personally swear by Amsoil synthetic ATF. Pricey (£60 / 5L), but what price a new gearbox? -------------------- '99 'V' XM 2.0 CT VSX Auto Estate RP 8360 Green.

Whilst on the subject (and i'm sure this question has been asked a million times before but....) does the XM take Dexron 2 like the BX does?
Mine was done 5k ago but i'll continue to do it with the engine oil at 5k. -------------------- 1993 BX 17TZD Turbo

Exhaust condition? tyres condition? VSX / Exclusive? Spheres done recently? bodywork condition? Ok answers received today as follows:- Does not seem to be any history to speak of. Gearboc drives well but don't know about oil changes. Exhaust I'm told is new. Tyres are good and it recently passed it's mot without any bother. It's an Exclusive. Again spheres are unknown. Bodywork is described as good. Hoping to see it at the weekend. The Orga no is RP 6659 and the mileage is actually 91k. Any other questions just shout! Ian,
The 4HP18 box takes Dexron 2 at recommended 9,000 mile oil changes, the auto-adaptive 4HP20 takes very expensive Esso LT71141 at 75,000 mile intervals. I think yours is the 4HP18? Ah an exclusive! I was about to ask if it was a S1 or S2, as they changed on the M reg.. but the "Exclusive" was the give away.
So its an Early Series 2 then... But wait you may shout, S2's started on L reg, well Parkers price guide would have you think that... Just bought a Black Onyx S1 on an M REG, 2 litre petrol, but its black!! And it was cheap! Did anyone see it on the bay? It definitely is an S2.
Personally I would never have another S1 for two reasons, firstly they are not as well protected against rust as an S2 and secondly the electrics are much more troublesome in my opinion. -------------------- Rehab Is for Quitters!

XM electrics have been made reliable (well, as much as they are) from the 1992 model thereafter. No differences from 1993 to 2000 models in that.
Why do u think so about the rust? Personal experience or other? George -------------------- XM '94 V6 12v, manual, Diravi - Mark "1.5" in black - bought: 138,000mls now: 167,000 miles

Hi George
There were a large number of changes to the wiring in 1994 with the Mk2 facelift of the XM. It is just a pity that Citroen did not design better electrical connections as even Mk2's still suffer from poor connections. The rust problem applies to all XM's it is just that they tend to rust in a few, usually hidden areas and from the inside rather then the outside. The corrosion protection was excellent for the expected normal life of these cars. We are now trying to take them beyond that time span and will see a good number of rust failures but they will tend to be specific to particular items, like the stut head rusting, that are on the edges or joints in the corrosion protection system. Cills are a prime example where the spot welds burn off the galvanising and the moisture inside the cill starts rusting the bottom joint. Regards XMexc -------------------- An interest in 2.5TD's.

Later S1's from 1992 as stated are as good as S2's I've done 24000 miles in my S1 1993 vintage, and with NO electrical problems what so ever.. If owners do what Citroen did them selfs from 1992 with the earthing points then all would be 99% better! Rgds citroenxm -------------------- 1993 K Reg 3.0 V6 12 Valve Auto (Green) LPG S1.5 SORNd

Update:-
Spent an hour going over the car today and its not what I expected. By that I mean its mint, both externally and internally. Cannot see any marks on the leather. In fact it's difficult to believe the interior has ever been sat in. Unbelievable! It has the electric armrest and its got the inner hatch glass panel. Radiator looks new. Thats the good news. The bad news is it needs a strut top on the drivers side. Obviously I'd suggest changing them as a pair. The sun roof tilts but doesn't slide. O/s/rear door window doesn't work nor do the mirrors. Cover on immobiliser is broken at the hinge end but intact and still in place. Probably benefit from a set of spheres. Needs a speed sensor which works intermittently. Aircon works fine but not ice cold so might benefit from a re-charge. Left hand display has the usual broken lines. To summarise, this is the cleanest XM I've ever seen. I'd say showroom condition and be comfortable with the description. It also the first one I've seen with both headlight washers in place, (all mine have something broken or missing.) Think thats it, any interest or questions please PM me. -------------------- Rehab Is for Quitters!
