A little information required, please Gentlemen.

We're about to fit LPG to one of the household toys. Those of you with LPG, does your registration document show the car as dual fuel ? If you converted it, did you tell DVLA and get them to change the document and if so, do they just accept your declaration or do you present it for inspection etc. ?
Any change in insurance likely and did your insurers want a fitting certificate. (My understanding is that at law there is absolutely nothing to stop self fit and absolutely no requirement for the 'certificate', which is basically a trade attempt to keep the business.)
Any other thoughts or info most welcome. It's going onto a carburettor engine, so no complications, I hope !

Mike.

I haven't asked the DVLA to change my docs and not many do but technically (legally) you should. If I remember correctly you need tax disc, lpg certificate and V5. Details are on DVLA web site though.

You may find this forum of use although most are installers.

Your insurance is unlikely to change. I haven't heard of one changing so far. You do need to tell them and they will send you new insirance documents. Most just ask if it has a certificate rather than need it sent to them. Obviously if you have a crash and you don't have a cert then your insurance company will walk away. I fitted mine myself and got it certified for £50. Prices do vary.

I fitted a multi point injection system from Czech Rep of all places. It was half the cost. They don't sell to the UK though. I placed the tank in place of the spare wheel. Spare wheel sits inside the boot now unless I need the space. I now also carry that punture repair in a can.

Hi Assich.

Have had a gander at the DVLA site. My reading is that only for vehicles registered after 2001 do you have to provide documentary evidence of engine changes. I have mailed them to see specifically what they say about LPG.
I am fascinated by this 'certificate' issue. Who exactly issues them and what are their qualifications ? I'm still pretty certain there is absolutely no legislative requirement for them.

Mike.

Hi onthecut

My first XM V6 was on gas, no certificate, nothing on the Log book - apparently the DVLA computers do not support Duel Fuel or Petrol/LPG on the systems for printing DOCs as FAR AS OLDER CARS ARE CONCERENED however this may have changed now!

My current LPG install on my 12v V6 I fitted myself, MOT man doesn't say a word, insurance apparently doesn't have LPG as a fuel either, so I dont seem to have a problem.

I think certificates are a "Piece of mind" to ensure a Safty aspect for a buyer/seller.. However, I would NOT sell a car that I've converted without getting it certified, I sold my first V6 as it was already fitted when I had it..

If I was to sell my current V6 I'd sort the install out and certify the system. But as I'm using it on a persol level and untill legistation says so, it will do without a certify..

Hi Guys.

Find below the verbatim copy of my reply from DVLA. NO certificate, no inspection, no hassle apparently.

Thank you for your email.

It may help if I explain, that vehicles registered before March 2001, pay excise duty according to their engine size only. If you wish to convert a vehicle that was registered before March 2001, this would not reduce the rate of duty you currently pay for your licence.

You will need to notify us of the conversion by sending in your V5C along with a covering letter, in order for us to update the vehicle record with the new details.

I trust this is useful.

Regards

How is your tank mounted? Mine is in the spare wheel well cage, but I had to make two brakets as the beam running accross the boot floor fouls the tank other wise. My tank is a 60l dougnut. The result is the tank is a little low and so I wodul like to get it rasied a bit.
