I took out and recharged and replaced my battery. Now the headlamps flash on and off. A red dash mounted warning light is flashing too. The car doesnt have an immobiliser or an alarm that I know of. Is this a factory fitted alarm? How do I switch it off?

Hi
It is the factory alarm system and by reconecting the battery you have not only activated but aso triggered the alarm, to reset it just lock and then unlock the car with the blip, if its a mk 2 there should be a lock under the bonnet on the left hand side at the front to turn the alarm off too. Thanks Dean,
I found the under bonnet lock, however the key rotates in it. In my ownership I've never used the blip. The little green light comes on in the fob, but does not deactivate the alarm. Its blowing a gale outside now and frrrrreeezing, so I'll leave it until the morning. |

Rotating key is usually the wrong key. Perhaps the door/ignition locks have been changed at some time. The under bonnet alarm switch lock barrel is the only one in an XM set that cannot be released for changing or repair.
A battery reconnection resets the alarm. You then have to go through the disarm sequence as listed in the owners manual to get things back to normal. The alternative is to unplug the control box (under passenger dash by central tunnel). John -------------------- An interest in 2.5TD's.

On my S2 the knack is -- make sure bonnet and tailgate shut. Get in, close drivers door, turn ignition on and immediately hold in the far left button in the centre of the dash for several seconds. This resets the alarm and cancels the flashing etc.

If needs be disconnect the alarm module under the glovebox, easily got to via the footwell.
