As I'm a pessimistic sod and it's the xm's mot on Wednesday what is it going to fail on? No prizes but an honourable mention goes to whoever gets nearest! biggrin.gif

inefficient parking brake and/or binding front brake caliper(s) dry.gif

ABS? Yes, that old chestnut that will appear just before the test!!

A new one I keep getting now at my particular station is:
headlight aim too low mad.gif

He must have new kit from last year as it's catching EVERY one I've taken.

It failed - BUT only on a nearside steering rack gaiter and the abs light stayed on while he was testing it. The abs light has been on and off since I bought it. How difficult is it to do the steering gaiter and I probably need to find a tame auto-electrician for the abs light. So not too bad!

Not had to do one yet on an XM, but if they're owt like a BX, then good luck sad.gif

Although ABS might not be too bad to sort out.

Commiserations! wacko.gif blink.gif

It's a right git.

It's uncanny this as I almost mentioned it having had this MOT fail I had
a couple of weeks back - I didn't mention it though as I thought it'd be a
jinx for you!!

I've just posted my thoughts on this to a fellow lister on a Xantia
nearside failed gaiter.

Unfortunately, this is a horrible job to sort out. The QH kit I managed to
find IS totally hopeless and wasn't even worth the 8 quid it cost me. The
only way out of my problem was a laborious repair with some superglue
- yes really - it got that desperate!

I even contemplated using fabric backed hard wearing tape as a belt and
braces approach but haven't seen the time to do such a daft thing though
the repair did pass the MOT retest with them paying good attention to it.

The genuine gaiter has not only to stretch a massive amount but has to
compress into almost nothing which does mean it's no better than plasticised
paper which will tear easily. I popped the whole gaiter off the rack's inner
end and wound the steering onto full lock where I was able to support the
gaiter as I glued it - a totally horrible experience that did actually bear
fruit though.

It's worth mentioning that putting the gaiter back on was a sod too.
I popped it back on at the outer end of the rack first almost forcing
itself inside out and then used a long screwdriver to lever the inner
onto the boss.

The offside is actually not the problem and you can use the genuine
boot from Citroen. The only good thing about the QH kit was a small
cone that you can ease the gaiter over the trackrod end with!!
Fortunately, there's no grease like CV boots to worry about.

I certainly wouldn't try undoing the inner swivel if I don't have to
as it will need a good strong grip with moleys/footprint and space
for leverage; this of course is a joke!!

The method discussed in my posting a while back focussed on using
an after-market gaiter on the nearside that has the stretch to go over
the fixed boss that the rack's strut attaches on to. I didn't persue this
further as nobody could offer any other alternative to the QH one
that looks totally unsuitable in material/size/shape.

If you have a multi meter then you will be able to trace your ABS problem yourself provided the light is lit when you do it. See the self-help section for this.

This is probably a stupid suggestion, but would it be possible/acceptable to repair the gaiter with a puncture repair patch?
