Thinking of selling my rigid and building a singlespeed 29er. Purely 'cause they are trendy of course
Anybody here ride one or have any comments. Seems hard in the UK to source good 29er horizontal drop-out frames. HB -------------------- 1993 XM Prestige Auto in Gris Silex. RP 5665. Mileage as at June 2007....73K.

Hi
Very OT indeed! singlespeed 29ers really seem to work best with "big lads". 6 foot plus. For most of us average folks I reckon that a normal size wheel machine is fine. This months Singletrack had a very nice looks singlespeed 29er frame (UK sourced steel) reviewed -can't remember the name but it got a decent write up. Tires, wheels and forks (rebas) all seem fairly easily available now. I've a rigid and FS single speed amongst my many bikes but I can't say that I'm drawn by the hype of 29ers. Why not make your rigid FS? For those of you simply citroen fans out there that aren't also into bicycles a singlespeed 29er is a moutain bike with a with wheels the size of racing bikes and one gear, for cycling masochists. Cheers Tony (secret double excentric - bikes and XMs!) PS. Off today to ride yesterday's Tour de France stage (Ghent to Compeigne 240km) tomorrow for the Jeff Thomas Foundation. Wouldn't mind a go on a 29er to feel the diff. I'm only 5'10, but people say they roll real nice. Don't want to convert my rigid, spent ages(well, pounds+++) getting it too where it is now. Chris King hubs, Pace Carbon Forks, Thomson Stem, Carbon Risers bla bla bla. Guess I just want another project in the garage....sound familiar? Carl Piccy of a 29er...if it works http://www.waltworks.com/dev/gallery/album...bikes/Keith.jpg and another...guess this was the reviewed bike you mention from on-one http://www.ridemonkey.com/mountain-bike-ph...42inbred03r.jpg This post has been edited by harryburgundy on July 11, 2007 08:22 pm -------------------- 1993 XM Prestige Auto in Gris Silex. That's the first time in a long while that I've downloaded a .jpg that works and doesn't come out as something from the codebreakers at Bletchley Park.

Hi Harry
The links worked fine for me too. However what about a cross bike instead of a 29er - lots of fun if it's not too knarly (dude!). I like the sound of your rigid ss. Nicely blinged up. What I like about the XM. Pop the back seats down, drop the bike in, no taking the wheels off etc. Although I do miss my first XM with a towbar and 4 bike pendle bike rack. Super luxury cycling and transport. Cheers Tony. PS. Derek - Sadist is right - yesterday 8.5 hours riding on the front of a bunch into a block headwind for 143miles. "Quite tiring". |
