Hi All

An interesting thing I have started to notice!

PAS feed pipes are NOT coated as they run along the steering rack! It is coated from the joing on the N/S of the rack but not along the rack to the Pinion..

I currently have the V6 lump Out of my 12v auto and thought I'd check the pipe work, removed the heat shield from the PAS pinion and low and behold dry rusty pipe work!!

I've heard of a few XM's PAS rust through, and theres the culprut. So I wire brushed the pipes, and under coated them to prevent and further rot when the newer unit is placed it. I also had to do the DRIVERS side suspension feed pipe as the coating had rubbed off and it was rusting too. Caught in the nick of time!.

Both the PAS pipes and the Drivers side suspension pipes look VERY trickyto get at while engine in situ, so get them checked ALL before you get a shower or pool!!

Where was your suspension pipe rusty? Mine became rusty and leaking next to the sphere, from rain water that penetrates that corner (but not the other corner). They had to drop that side of the subframe to get the replacement past by.

The 2.5 is "famous" just where the pipes leave the rear nearside sill area to route up to the subframe.

Coated for life? Pah!

PAS Pipes

The originals on the 91 I had were like that but I am pretty sure the replacements were coated all the way.

They are easier to replace than you think with access in through the wheel arch and from behind the engine while you look from the under the passanger footwell I seem to remember. I have replaced two steering racks and always took the pipes off to prevent damage before squeezing the rack through the gap in the wheel arch.

Hi jorgy9,

On your car it would be the passenger side, but UK Drivers side, it was rusty down the BOTTOM, as it bends to go behind the steering rack, theres also a securuing catch .. Looking at the layout, yes I can see that the subframe woulod need dropping slightly, as the rack is awkwadly placed around that side feed pipe.. the UK Passenger side pipe is a doddle..
