I've just read Rowan's post about the running temperature on his 2.5 Diesel, and I seem to be having the same thing happening to my 2.1TD in that the engine rarely seems to get above about 70ish on the dashboard guage except when I'm stuck for ages in very slow traffic, and certainly not when moving at any speed.
Responses to Rowan refer to the thermostat being possibly stuck open. I'll try the test to see when the radiator gets hot (or warms up gradually) but can someone please tell me where the thermostat is located. Is there some link with the sensors at the pump housing? I have only recently acquired my 2.1TD estate after many years driving slowly rusting CXs and am keen to get as much of it as possible working properly. Sounds just the same as mine and my mates 2.1. Gets up to about 90 then the fan comes in.
The thermostat is situated down the back of the engine sort of behind the water pump Not the easiest of things to get at, and with the possibility of shearing old bolts, I decided to leave well alone. -------------------- 92 (J) 2.1TD Est. Usual Green.

It is my understanding that the 2.1 should behave like the 2.5 inasmuch it should run at a fairly steady 90 degrees C, varying very slightly (say 10 Deg C) under heavy load.

I have had to replace the thermostat on two of mine, not the easiest job in the world, but not the most difficult either. Looking from the front its located at the back left hand end of the block (follow the bottom hose). Its not very easy to see unless you use a mirror. You should be able to feel the housing and where the bolts are, again it isn't to difficult to get a spanner or socket on them and once you have done it, the second time is much easier!
Its well worth doing, especially in the winter as it considerably increases the heater output. It also of course makes the engine run much more efficiently. Peter.N. -------------------- Used to have:
