Andrew,
do u have any sort of gearbox issue with your V6s? My 12v at 162,000mls (lhd) started making a noise a while ago that goes away when I clutch it as much as for the gears being able to pass. It's there at any time and increases steadily with revs. Does it in all gears. I also noticed that when I decelerate with the aid of gearbox it does a sort of noise like when you go on reverse and go a bit fast (as in any car). My indy drove it for a while and said that it is rather not the clutch but something in the box. Last christmas -sorry, the "winterseason"!- suddenly I couldn't put any gear in. With some effort I managed to drive -it sort of had fixed itself a bit the next day- but immediately ordered a new clutch and put it 2-3 days after. I think when this hapenned it was doing the same noise. All was OK after new clutch, but now noise starts again. Only indication they found in old clutch (which was worn anyway) was a sign of one of the 3 or 4 springs on the clutch rubbing against something -but they didn't thought anything about it (probably they wanted me just to take the car and go away!)-. Any relation to your experience? regards George -------------------- XM '94 V6 12v, manual, Diravi - Mark "1.5" in black - bought: 138,000mls now: 167,000 miles

Hi George.
In truth no problems at all. I'm not 100% certain if the only thing I have had on the V6 manuals is a slight delay/baulking on reverse on one car although that may very much be down to my impatience in selecting gears - I guess in truth I'm not over gentle in my gear changing with my clutch/gear change described by some as like a light switch fast action I do alright on clutch wear as it doesn't get much deliberate feathering/slippage! In answer to the whine/fragility wear etc issues though, I've found the BE 2.0i boxes more hassle with a lovely changing box losing it's 5th rather irritatingly; an alleged 'simple fix' that I didn't get to sort as I decided it was a good excuse for the car to have an earlier than hoped clutch change with an alternate box fitted instead. The only failure experience I can recount is a 2.1 TD Xm (which uses the same box). It had a clutch fitted and it appears the clutch plate wasn't fitted the correct way round by the cars' seller - this is guess work but basically it developed the severest clutch jolting action on take up and lost any forward motion. It was suggested although not examined to test that the diff sealing oil seals weren't renewed or if they were weren't fitted correctly. Nice car with a good engine that just needs some time spending on it sometime! Frankly I'd have a Cx/GS box over any Xm box any day as the damned things leak oil at the mearest hint of spannering work near the driveshafts - not a problem on the older cars!! Andrew |

Andrew,
Gordons V6 24v needs a new gearbox, yea. From what i recall Gordon saying some of the bearings internally in the box have failed, and its leaked the oil from the box onto the clutch aswell. David. -------------------- 1990 V6 SEi Auto - breaking for spares.
