I am trying to remove the sump with engine in situ. on my mk 1 2.1 turbo . I have removed all the bolts, and sump is loose. I can not get it off, it appears to be stuck on the gearbox side on a oil pick up pipe, and on the pulley side it jammed on the subframe. The haynes manual talks about just sliding it out! But then they didn't tell my about the hidden bolts in AC brackets either.

hi
although mines a petrol i had the same problem with the subframe, in the end i GENTLY (you dont wana bust that mount) levered between the subframe and rear engine mount to give enough clearance to get the b#####d thing out but it is awkward, im not sure about your oil pipe though, mine was just very tight around the oil pump housing.
Besides you should never trust a haynes manual when it says "just undo/withdraw you always end up swinging off it with a hammer in one hand and a crowbar in the other cursing away to yourself!!!!

Hi iheath,
Just be aware the the oilpick-up pan sits in the bottom of the sump, i disconnected the upper engine mount and raised the engine an inch or so to slide the sump around a bit, also the oil level sensor needs to be lifted - access the rear of the engine from underneath. And as you say the a/c mounts are a trifle awkward!
