QUOTE (Little&Large @ May 24 2007, 16:39 PM)
Hi Steve
I went out on a 50 mile run today and got 49.1mpg....which I would normally be thrilled with.BUT I have just bought the attached 2cv van to reduce my fuel bills and I doubt it is going to do many more miles to the gallon at 40mph!
Regards Rob

You will probably find that the XM estate has more room in it too - I could get three 28" TV's in the back of mine with the seat up!

I believe 620 miles is the limit of it's calculations for some reason. The petrols stop around that figure too (in fact my 2.1 was previously a petrol TCT). Same way as it stops counting at a certain number of miles before empty too, I often find its quite happy to cut out from fuel starvation at anything below 25ish miles when you go on hills etc.

Interestingly, when I fill up and brim the tank, as I leave the petrol station, the range remaining till empty always starts at about 400ish, then as I drive along it creeps up, and within a few miles its in the 600 range. I believe this little foible may be because my computer is calibrated for a petrol engine perhaps... but once going it does give quite an accurate picture of the diesel figures.

Hi, my 2.1 is an epic and give it a bit of welly it smokes for a little while. I was worried about the amount of engine oil collecting in the inlet manifold but the general opinion is that they all do this - something to do with the engine breather system whick I intend to look at as soon as i've been a good boy and finished installing the new kitchen for Mrs P.

Mine too goes like stink biggrin.gif

I've been out for a run in the peak district today, even ambling along the average MPG is 39/40mpg according to the gauge. Very nice ride though.

I think mine does about 40 on a bad day, but then I do tend to boot the shit out of it as I'm in a hurry 90% of the time!
I rarely amble along. However, the girlfriend will be driving it regularly soon, so I'll see what kind of figures it comes up with then...

Oh yes Colin, I was talking to my cousin the other day, hes a Peugeot mechanic, so sees rather a lot of the XUD engines, mainly 1.9s, but he does get the odd 2.1.

I asked him about the oil in the manifold pipe and he said 'Oh, they all do that, its just a trait of that engine, I rarely see one that doesn't to be honest, I wouldn't worry about it'.
His own 1.9 406 does it and he doesn't seem concerned, so thats a good sign! smile.gif

Yes they all deposit oil in the air intake ducting, my red one does and it has a new engine!

I decided to have a look inside the plastic inlet manifold last week. It was absolutely filthy, full of black sludge. I took it off and soaked it in petrol then used a petrol soaked rag as a pull through. Then I had a go cleaning up the rubber joiners and the alloy part of the manifold that was still fastened to the engine. I cleaned out the pipe from the intercooler too. When putting back together I used some metal off a beer can to seal off the EGR inlet. I suppose that it's worse for diesels because no fuel mist/vapour flows across the back of the inlet valve unlike non GDi petrols. I'm considering running the engine and using a mist sprayer to spray a small amount of diesel into the inlet manifold to try to clean up the parts I can't reach. I'm aware that I'll need to be very careful as this will cause the engine to rev with no control. If it wasn't such a big job I'd strip the top end and clean it up properly. If the head gasket should go I'll do it then.

Steve.

Hi Steve et al,

When I replaced my head gasket I cleaned up all the inlet trakts and the valves before lapping in the seatings, there was a huge build up of crud in the tracts and on the valves behind the valve heads. The aluminium inlet manifold (top and bottom parts) was also thoroughly cleaned out but after just a few months it looks just as gunged up again ! I reckon the problem lies with the engine breathing system which, once I've finished fixing things for Mrs. P I fully intend to investigate blink.gif

Regards to all fellow sufferers, Colin.

Currently the XM is reporting 34/35 MPG when driving it gently. I guess I really need to authenticate the computer with actual MPG, surely it can't be that bad can it? What reading do others get from the computer?

I've asked this on XM-L too.

The computer is showing what thought was a low average MPG
reading, about 34 MPG. This isn't from town driving so I thought I'd
have a look under the bonnet to see if there was anything obviously
wrong, fuel leak, etc. No signs and no smell of that. So I though I'd
disconnect the sensor in the pipe from the intercooler to the inlet
manifold and see if this had any effect, nothing so I reconnected it.
Taking it one step further I decided to see what would happen if I
disconnected the needle lift sensor, same again nothing, not even a
engine management light on the dash. Am I wrong to expect this? The
engine management light comes on before starting the engine so the
bulbs OK.

Any comments please?

Thanks.

Steve.

Hi steelcityuk,
The trip computer read out info is based on theoretical operating conditions and bares only cursory semblance to real real time driving conditions - as is shown by it's range adjustments! The EPIC system seems to detect an output or control fault rather than sensory data ,so would not indicate an ENGINE MANAGEMENT FAULT when an input sensor is disconnected , VERY ODD, must do some testing of my own now you triggered my curiosity!

Hi Rob,

Didn't realise that Epic's did that. Thanks for the info.
