I have just been given the bad news from citroen that the speed sensor for my 89/90 2.0i (4775) xm is no longer available
Part number is 96008161 speed sensor for a cable speedo fitted in the top of the gear box not the one that fits in the cable. Thanks chris This post has been edited by g717xnm on May 11, 2007 03:20 pm |

Your spares man did not go far enough with his enquiries. The part number you quote has been superseded by 591885. If he tells you it not available according to his records, ask him to order that new number and see what happens. (If you can afford it).
There is a chance that there is one on the XM now standing in my field waiting for folk to ask for the parts they need. I don't know how far away you are. I am 3 miles from Junct.20 on the M1 and 6 miles from J1 M6 and A14. -------------------- Xantia 2 litre HDi Saloon X reg 1999

Thanks for that info. I was planing to change this complete unit when i changed the oil seal. Which i did on Saturday so it will have to wait until i drain the gear box down again and the weather allows. Can i just check that the code you gave me is for the cabe driven speedo and allows for the cable to attach to it at the gear box also has the socket for the speed senser. Sorry to ask again, i know they did one that fixed in the middle of the speedo cable and at some point got rid of the cable altogether and went electronic.
I live down in oxford and not sure when i will be heading in your direction. Pending house move and the building of my nephews wooden play equipment in Hereford has my weekends booked up for now. But i know i will always need parts and help to keep my xm on the road... she's getting a bit long in the tooth and things just keep falling off! Thanks again chris 2.0i xm (rp4775) |

I can confirm that the part number I have given you supersedes the part number you have been given, and refers to the same part that you require.

Hi G717XNM
The XM last speedo drive I bought from Citroen was about £20 including vat. I did not have a particularly helpful dealer and they would only supply the casing which is universal to a number of Citroen models. Sorting out the correct plastic drive centre piece was just too much for them. They wanted me to bring the old one in so they could see the shape and count the teeth while I wanted to leave it in the car until I had a replacement. The packet of the one supplied was actually marked Saxo but fitted correctly. Since then I collected a few secondhand ones as spares/ out of interest. There seem to be 3 basic types of drive casing - cable drive only - cable & electric drive - electric only. They seem to be mechanically interchangable. Slightly off topic, but the speedo in my old XM jitters about +/- 5mph at several Hz,
is a failing sensor the probable cause of this? -------------------- XM 2.0i Prestiege (Red) 1992 K reg RP 5692 (deceased)

If by the 'old one' you mean your 'K' reg, it will have a mechanical speedo so it will probably be the cable.
