New owner getting to grips with new love!
Can someone tell me the quantity of oil including filter for the 2.5 TD engine as my manual states 4.75 litres yet handbook states 8 litres!? Also does anyone have any particular recommendation for the type of oil to use and any problems with using a flushing oil? Cheers John tubaman |

Hello there!
Flushing oil is good idea, particularly if you're unsure about last change, or it looks really gunky! As for oil, if you can afford it go fully synthetic. This is (I believe) the current thinking from within ranks of CCC. Quantity is more likely to be 8, as 4.5 is not a lot... Good luck -------------------- '01 Y C5 Exclusive SE

Cheers guys,
Carried out oil change today. Wow what a lot of oil came out! Yet another problem has arisen, in that there is an oil leak. Not terrible, but is spraying along length of underside when travelling at speed. Leaving lots of little spots where ever I park. Worried might fromt crankshaft oil seal as have had this go on other cars, but fortunately this seems ok. Unable so far to track it down, though definately not from cam cover or cylinder head. Do you know of any typical places the 2.5 leaks from? John tubaman |

Hi
Does the leak look like its high up as it were on the engine or lower down. Do the spots show up in front or behind the sump (ie which side of the engine) Ive got a small one (ooer) from the return pipe that runs from the rocker cover past the glow plugs etc and back in to the motor next to the oil filter. Small split that gives about 3 drips a night but by god does it make a mess of the underside. Its been like this for four years now. So unless it gets worse try not to wory too much Mark -------------------- 1995 2.1 VSX AC Leather dead and now beer cans

John,
If the head's been off at any time then the cam carrier is the most likely culprit. There's no gasket. It relies on a bead of silicone sealant on the mating surfaces when it's rebuilt. I know to my cost the resulting mess if you don't pay attention to this. I had to take mine back off after the first rebuild which is almost the same amount of work as doing the head gasket itself. Another suggestion is the big hollow bolt you see when you take off the oil filter. The bolt keeps the oil cooler clamped to the casting which conveys the oil back to the sump. I found this slack during one exploration for my leak. Other than that, the other guys suggestions are worth a try. Cheers noz -------------------- '10 '59' C5 2.0 HDi Exclusive Tourer Metallic Grey

John,
if the "leak" only started after the oil change check that the little "drip tray" around the base of the filter is'nt full of oil from when you took the filter off. Enjoy your XM, Bigmixer |

John,
The little drip tray at the base of the il filter as actually the water cooled oil cooler. The threaded hollow bolt which the filter screws down on to is double ended. The other end screws on to the braket which sticks out from the engine block. THat bracket is hollow and is used to return the filtered oil to the sump. The oil filter is a side strem filter as opposed to an in line filter. Part of the oil is forced through the filter and returns to the sump. The remainder is passed to the oil galleries insid e the block and head for lubrication. The double ended hollow bolt under the filter cartridge holds the oil cooler onto the engine bracket. If this has become slackened whilst changing the filter then that could be the source of your leak as Bigmixer has suggested. Remove the filter, remove the big hollow bolt in the middle. Lift up the oil cooler (still with the water hoss attached) and make sure the o-ring is seated properly in the groove underneath. Set the oil cooler down on the bracket surface and replace the hollow bolt. Tighten to the appropriate torque. Refit the filter cartridge. This should solve the problem if this is where the oil was coming from. Cheers Noz -------------------- '10 '59' C5 2.0 HDi Exclusive Tourer Metallic Grey
