I resurrected my strut mount r&r pics tonight to our website.

http://www.craigdeb.com/photos/thumbnails.php?album=16

Note that this is on an Aussie delivered car so rust is unknown. We get probs with McStrut mount problems because the rubber perishes. This has also happened on Xantias and I believe a few BX.

Hi Graig,

Nice job there. Where did you get the new top from though??? I thought one could only buy the whole "top+strut" set at a steep price, from Citroen ?!

regards
George

I phoned the dealer I bought the car from and ordered one. It did cost a bit more than $600AU but when I received it I could see it was worth it considering the casting and machining etc.

Incidentally, all Aus delivered XMs were V6 therefore all had the thicker struts and of course mounts - I think 23mm diameter? A few weeks after this job was done I assisted the person who assisted me to change the strut mounts on her car. That is when we discovered as hers is a private import S1 2l Turbo, that it had the thinner struts etc. That was corrected by buying second hand V6 struts from an Aussie wrecker.

Hi Craig,

Excellent photos again - many thanks. You really are to be congratulated on the photos you've got on Coppermine on your site - they're incredibly informative for someone contemplating the jobs you've covered. I have to admire the care you've taken with them and the variety of shots from various angles - all excellent stuff for those who've not done a particular job before.

To break off in the middle of these jobs to record your progress for the benefit of others shows true dedication to the XM community.

Thanks very much Craig.

Roy

Hi George,

For the sake of comparison - here's what my local Citroen Dealer quoted me recently.

1996 2.5TD Hatch Strut Tops

L/H 527188 £226.41+ VAT
R/H 527189 £226.41+ VAT
Grommet (2 required) 527192 £7.66 + VAT each

(£130 + VAT for dealer to fit)

Something interesting came out of this enquiry too. The prices quoted were for the usual next day delivery service. The dealer also places a "stock order" every week for delivery the following week - and if prepared to wait for that service he would have done the strut tops @ £180 + VAT each. A reasonable saving if you're buying expensive parts.

Roy

Roy

Thanks. I am glad someone else finds them useful. I like to use pics when doing jobs like this and sometimes even the Haynes BOFT ones are useful. I use my old 2MP Nikon out in the garage and sometimes have a plastic bag handy to protect it from grease. It doesn't take long to do and as you say, it assists others. All part of the Citroen camaraderie. cool.gif
