Hi All

Some small advice. My S1 V6 24v has an awfull box of cogs in it.. It now crunches into second and third gear.. and really could do with changing it!

I have seen a box on ebay, apparently done 46k and the oil was still golden when drained, but its from a 2.oi Turbo car.. (4 cyls)

I was wondering does anyone know of the outcome of fitting a 4 cyl Box to a 6 cyl engine? I'm fully aware of different gear ratios, but would it make much difference.. I also guess that the final ratio will be slightly higer, as 4 cyls rev higer in top then 6 cyls.. IE: 80 mph at 3000rpm 6 cyls, were as if I'm right, 80mph at 3500 rpm..

Any thoughts on this??

Regards

Yes, but I've been looking at her as a whole and to be honest it would be a crime!

There are not very many TD's with a low: 133k miles on clock left!!

and Manual either!

So I think its worth rescuing!

THANKYOU for the ratios

Andrew, so what does the higher ratio in 5th mean on DERV box, V6 will rev lower, or higher??

Now, anyone got a DERV box for sale!!!!

Regards
citroenxm

You sly fox! Changing your signature info now makes me look like I'm losing
my marbles when anyone reads it new!! laugh.gif Glad my mention helped you realise
you don't actually want to scrap it!

The higher ratio on 5th should make the revs of the V6 engine lower - can't
be bad can it!?

The ratios aren't too massively different, it's not like you go racing in reverse
and 1st, 2nd and 3rd aren't going to feel any different...

Hi Citroenxm,

You obviously are capable of getting the box out and putting it back in, why not try ringing round the gearbox repairers as the huge prices they charge usually include removal and refitting of the box. If you could deliver it to them as a seperate unit the repair might be quite simple and cheap. They might even have a look at it for free so won't cost much, except your time, even if it is scrap. Got to be worth a try.

Good luck

John

Bigjohnh

Unfortunally over here on ole little Anglesey, there aint many gearbox speacialist, so they cancharge an arm and a leg and in fact when I had my 2nd V6 XM which had been converted to manual, and blew the diff, I was half way through removal of the box and I phoned a local gearbox place and they wanted SILLY money!!

So I think a Pug 605 DERV box or similar will be a good choice.. I like the idea of a lower 5th, when I'm cruiseing the engine is working less an so should give me a better MP LPG G. ... ..

Try something we have been having great success with in Australia. Use the correct spec oil for the box and add a tube of Nulon G70 manual gearbox additive.

It has worked well in Aus for DS, CX and BXs I believe. Fixes up synchro crunches and makes changes much smoother.

If you try it and it doesn't work, it has cost a whole heap less than installing a replacement box.

Hi UFO,

obviously this additive would be recommended for improving any gearbox also? Or should it only be used in urgent cases?

George
