Right had enough of cable speedos having had a brand new cable just snap withing 30 miles.

A quick tour of my local playground (Scrapyard) reveals an S2 16V estate. This I belive has the later electronic speedo. So I am considering replaceng the whole instrument panel with the later version as it looks like it will physically just repalce the old one. But I have yet to see the conectors at teh botom, obvioulsy the later one will have an extra wire for the speedo signal, but teh rest shoudl be pretty much the same, have they added anything else? or moved things about just for the hell of it?. I know I will need the sender unit, the car is an auto, and my car is a manual. Although my car already has a speed sensor on it.

Hi Zaphod

The XM electric speedo has at least 2 sections of wiring. In the engine bay it is a simple 4 wire cable independant of the main car loom. There is a connector in this 4 way cable under the LHM tank. I very much doubt that this wiring remains separate from the main loom in the area behind the dashboard and into the speedo. Your Mk1 will be missing this essential part of the speedo wiring. The speedo sender on the transmission almost certainly needs to be changed and this could present a few problems apart from the difficulty of access. The body of the senders are common so either can be fitted. In fact citroen produced a composite one at one stage (late MK1) that had both mechanical and electrical contacts present. The next thing to sort out is the number of teeth on the plastic drive cog. This fits into the sender and often drops out when the sender is removed from the transmission. There are around 20 different types of drive cog matched to particular model with varying shape and number of teeth. When I bought a replacement sender I wanted a new drive cog. My ever helpfull local source of spares gave up after 15 minutes of LASER system searching to identify the part number and said the only way they could determine which one the car needed was to bring the old one in so they could see the shape and count the number of teeth. In the end I used the old one.

Best of luck if you do try the conversion.

Regards

The 4 wires are not a worry, one will be earth, one power, one will be the signal, the 4th could be an earth to the instrment, running these will not be a problem. mind you a look at the circuit diagram would help!

One thing I do need is a wiring diagram of the sensor/speedo. Also how would this effect the hydractive and ABS ECUs? (I belive both use a speed signal)

Ok I have the dash assembly from an S2 along with it's sender. I thought I woudl try the S2 dash in palce of the S1, with some results indcicating Pierre Le Pillock and Andre le Arsehole have been at work. speedo aside all the instruments work as expected, and all the warning lights light up in the same locations for the same functions. Those who have seen both setups will now be thinking, but the warning lights changed position, and inded they have, so the indicator warning light is falshing in the same location as teh S1, but that symbol is now Main beam!. So if any kind soul has the pin outs for each instrument pack that would help a lot!
