Hi,

Just thought i would share this, both my xm series one have had rev counters that have gone nuts at random times.

Since owning this Xm i noticed while listening to the radio that it happens when my mobile is polling for a signal or what ever its doing, also happens if i was using the mobile randomly too.
Just picking the mobile up and moving it and the needle stops going nuts everytime.

On my last xm i nearly changed the rev counter!

Cheers

It could be that there is a high resistance connection somewhere, probably on the two pin plug connected to the TDC sensor on the gearbox end of the cylinder head. It could have a low enough resistance to be recieving a signal from the sensor but be high enough to allow it to pick up spurious signals.

Its a Government ploy to stop you using your mobile in the car!

I dont think they are that advanced yet, it would have to stop everything working!

my xm does this sometimes when i hit the brake pedal, sometimes my rev finger drops to nothing, sometimes it goes round to 6500rpm.

Obviously the engine aint doing that kinda rpm!!

I've put it down to the fact that my alternator wasnt working properly.

Hi David

On the 2.1 diesels they are driven by the TDC sensor, dont know if all the others are the same. I am sure someone will tell us though!

Thats why I run one, can't afford to run a deisel!. 2.0i, on LPG, 28MPG, at 34 pence a litre (road fuel duty paid) or 12p litre (road fuel duty 'in the post'). I do my own conversions parts ahve been moved from car to car over the years only specific part is the mixer, last one was £45 IIRC

Stewart,

Have you any experience of LPGing a turbo car?

John

Yes, never doing it again!. Actually they can be done, but with sequential multi point system (reasd close to £1000 on parts), trying it with a mixer based system (about £350-£400 worth of parts) is 'troblesome' to say the least, and led in my case to 4 new pistons before it was running right as there is a tendance for the mixutre to go lean whcih in turn melts pistons very rapidly whle traveling at 80 on the M4! ALthough low presure turbos (like the XM I belive) are less troublesome. LPG also gives thepotential for morerather than less power with the turbos, as it has an octane rating of 110 so if you were inclined you could wind up soem silly levels o fboost

On my S1 V6 when I replaced the third sensor along from the left (as you look under the bonnet facing towards the windscreen) the rev counter went beserk and shot right over to the max stop. Removing and replacing the relay drives the rev needle. When I took the battery terminals off and replaced them it went back to zero. It might be something to do with this relay?
